EU travel ban: occasion for rethinking peace strategy
THE European Union's (EU) decision that LTTE will no longer be received in any of its member states signal the increased level of concern of the international community at the deterioration of Sri Lanka's peace process. The evolving international response reflects the growing role of the international community in resolving internal conflicts where the conflicting parties are unable to resolve their disputes on their own, the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka said. They also gave a public commitment that they would refrain from utilising violence in the pursuit of political objectives. "However, there has been a continuous resort to violence and to human rights abuses that has eroded the credibility of the peace process both locally and internationally. These violations have been a primary factor in weakening the peace process and it is in this context that the European Union may have imposed these travel restrictions on the LTTE.

The European Union travel ban on the LTTE will not impact on the role of the Norwegian peace facilitators, a Norwegian Embassy spokeswoman said. "We are not party to the declaration...The ban will not have any impact on us," Norwegian Embassy spokeswoman Kjersti Tromsdal told the Sunday Observer. Former Head of the Mission of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Trond Furuhovde will visit the island, as scheduled, in the middle of this month to consult the government and the LTTE on reviewing the Ceasefire Agreement. "The EU is actually considering the formal listing of the LTTE as a terrorist organisation. In the meantime, the EU has agreed that with immediate effect, the delegations from the LTTE will no longer be received in any EU member states until further notice". The EU declaration further stated that the member states would take national measures to curb illegal activities, including fund-raising and propaganda by LTTE front organisations and individual supporters.

TamilNet in an interview discussed the views of the LTTE about the EU Declaration with the LTTE political wing leader Thamilchelvan The declaration is based on unsubstantiated charges by the Sri Lankan government. It is lopsided and issued without taking into consideration the opinion and the just arguments of the Tamils, an equal party to the peace process. The declaration has caused irreparable damage to prospects for peace and has ruined the trust the Tamil people had on the International Community. The European Union, instead of pressuring the political leaders of the South to negotiate in good faith, has chosen to penalise the Liberation Tigers, disregarding the feelings of our people. As an equal partner seriously committed to a peaceful negotiation, we are concerned that this will impact the future progress of the peace process. Also Colombo's views and stand on the peace process will harden as it will interpret the EU's declaration as providing tacit support to its policies.

EXPRESSING the hope that the travel ban on the LTTE by the European Union will help break the deadlock on the peace front, the Government emphasised the EU move will facilitate and not complicate the peace process. Government Spokesman and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva addressing the media at the weekly Cabinet briefing at the information Department said: "We do not think the EU ban will in any way be a hindrance to the peace process." In response to media queries he asserted that this move which they see as a positive development to break the current deadlock and push the peace process forward, will not diminish the Government's desire for a negotiated settlement. "The Government's position is that its desire for a negotiated settlement and a dialogue with the LTTE has not diminished." Asked the current position with regard to the proposed CFA talks, the minister said the Government was still awaiting a response from the LTTE on this matter.

s.udayaraj is a topper in Selam district in the higher secondary
examination.However,he was refused a seat in a medical college for
the simple reason that he is a Srilankan refugee.

Udayaraj, son of a Srilankan refugee ,scored 49.58 in biology and
47.08 in physics by burning the candle at both ends during the
entrance examination.His effort did not go waste as he was called
for medical counselling. But Udayaraj was denied admission after
counselling as there was no seat for refugees allotted in any of
professional courses in the state.The high-spirited boy scored 1,137
marks in the highersecondary examination with a centum(100) in biology and chemistry.

Speaking to reporters on Friday,Udayaraj said, "For the last four months,
I have been under a gridlle of stress as I really want to become a doctor."
Seeking the chief minister's intervention, Udayaraj said, "She has helped
hundreds of students for their education but I am worried as there is no
such help in my case".

Mr.Sivalingam father of Udayaraj,said the representations and petitions to the
higher officials of the Goverment had gone in vain. He said that he came
to Rameswarm in 1990 with his wife and two children and now his only wish was
to see his son earning a degree in medicine to serve the poor. Udayaraj is
currently helping his daily wage earning father father in collecting firewood
in Melur district. Teachers of the Government Higher Secondary School at
Melur provided clothes and helped him to join a coaching centre
for the entrance examination .

புரியாதவர்களுக்கு கனவில் வந்தவர் என் அப்பத்தா.
இது போல அடிக்கடி வரும். காட்சிகளில் மட்டும் மாற்றம் ஆனால் கரு ஒன்றே.

டெல்லி பிதாம்புராவை சேர்ந்தவர் ராவ்பீம்சிங் இவரது மகள் நீருசிங் (வயது 23). அங்குள்ள ஒரு கல்லூரியில் எம்.பில் படித்து வந்தார். அவருக்கும் கால் சென்டர் ஒன்றில் பணியாற்றி வந்த சரன்ஜித் (26) என்ற வாலிபருக்கும் காதல் இருந்து வந்தது. இருவரும் 6 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு வீட்டில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு தெரியாமல் கோவிலுக்கு சென்று திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டனர்.

இதற்கு ராவ்பீம்சிங் கடும் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்தார். நேற்று அவர் துப்பாக்கியை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு சரன்ஜித் சிங்கை தேடி சென்றார். அவருடன் வாக்குவாதம் செய்தார். இதை மகள் நீருசிங் எதிர்த்தார். ஆத்திரத்தின் உச்சத்தில் இருந்த ராவ்பீம்சிங் துப்பாக்கியை எடுத்து சரன்ஜித்தை நோக்கி சுட்டார்.

உடனே சினிமா சம்பவம் போல நீருசிங் காதலரின் உயிரை காப்பாற்றுவதற்காக குறுக்கே பாய்ந்தார். துப்பாக்கி குண்டுகள் அவர் தலையிலும், மார்பு பகுதியிலும் பாய்ந்தன. அந்த இடத்திலேயே நீருசிங் உயிர் இழந்தார். சரன்ஜித் சிங்கின் கைகளிலும் குண்டு பாய்ந்து இருந்தது. அவர் ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார். அபாய கட்டத்தை அவர் தாண்டி விட்டதாக டாக்டர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.
