2,500 வருடங்களுக்கு முற்பட்ட வரலாற்றுப் பெருமைக்குரிய எமது நாடு, வரலாற்றில் என்றுமில்லாதவாறு பேரனர்த்தத்துக்கு முகங்கொடுத்துள்ள நிலையில், இம்முறை நாம் தைப்பொங்கல் தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். இந்து பக்தர்கள் அறுவடையின் ஆரம்ப நாளாகத் தைப்பொங்கலை உற்சவபூர்வமாகக் கொண்டாடி மகிழ்கின்றனர். தைப்பொங்கல் புதிய எதிர்பார்ப்புகளுடன் கூடிய சுபிட்சத்தையும் மகிழ்ச்சியையும் குறித்து நிற்கின்றது.

2005 புத்தாண்டு இலங்கை வாழ் மக்கள் நினைத்திராத, எதிர்பார்த்திராத அனர்த்தங்களுடனேயே மலர்ந்துள்ளது. சாதி, மத, குல, எல்லை பேதமின்றி இயற்கையின் கொடூர விளைவுகளுக்கு நாம் முகங்கொடுத்தோம். பொதுவாக, தென் பகுதி மக்களைப் போன்று, வடக்கு, கிழக்குப் பிரதேசங்களில் வாழும் தமிழ் மக்களுக்கும் இதனால் பலத்த பாதிப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. நாம் இந்நாட்டில் பிளவுபட்டு வாழ்வதில் எவ்வித முக்கியத்துவமும் இல்லை என்பதையே இயற்கை எமக்கு நன்கு உணர்த்தியுள்ளது.

ஆதலால், சமாதானத்தையும் சுபிட்சத்தையும் அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட தைப்பொங்கல் தினத்தில் இந்த உன்னத குறிக்கோள்களை அடையுமுகமாக கொடூர அனர்த்தங்களுக்கு முகங்கொடுத்துள்ள நாம் என்றுமில்லாதவாறு ஐக்கியமாகவும் சமத்துவமாகவும் இணைந்து செயலாற்ற வேண்டியுள்ளது. இன ரீதியான யுத்தத்துக்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைத்து, நிலையான சமாதானத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி நாட்டை மீளக்கட்டியெழுப்பும் பாரதூரமான கைங்கரியத்துக்குத் தோள்கொடுத்து உதவ நாமனைவரும் இன்றைய தினம் திடசங்கற்பம் பூணுவோமாக.

அதேபோன்று, அனைத்தின மக்களினதும் கலாசாரங்களைப் பேணி, ஒவ்வொருவர் மீதுள்ள ஐயம், குரோதவுணர்வுகள், வக்கிர எண்ணங்களிலிருந்து விடுபட்டு அனைவரும் கௌரவத்துடன் வாழக்கூடிய ஒரு நாட்டைக் கட்டியெழுப்ப நாமனைவரும் அணிதிரள்வோமாக.

இலங்கை வாழ் அனைத்துத் தமிழ் மக்களுக்கும் சுபிட்சமும் மகிழ்ச்சியும் கிட்டவேண்டுமென நான் உளமாரப் பிரார்த்திக்கின்றேன்.

பிரதமரின் பொங்கல் வாழ்த்து

பிரதமர் மகிந்த ராஜபக்ஷ விடுத்திருக்கும் தைத்திருநாள் வாழ்த்துச் செய்தியில் தெரிவித்திருப்பதாவது;

இயற்கை அனர்த்தம் இன, மத, மொழி பாராமல் சீற்றத்தைக் காட்டிவிட்டுப் போயிருக்கின்றது. இன, மத, மொழி மட்டுமன்றி, கட்சி பேதங்களிலிருந்து அழிவுற்ற நாட்டை மீண்டும் கட்டியெழுப்ப இப்பொங்கல் திருநாளில் நாம் திடசங்கற்பம் பூணுவோம்.

சுனாமி நமக்குள்ளிருக்கும் பிளவுகளை மறந்து இந்நாட்டில் சமாதானமும் சௌஜன்யமும் நிலவ ஒத்துழைப்பு வழங்க வேண்டுமென எமக்கு உணர்த்தியுள்ளது.

எமது நாட்டில் வாழும் இந்துக்கள் இம்முறை பொங்கல் திருநாளைக் கொண்டாட மாட்டார்கள். வடக்கு, கிழக்கு மக்கள் இராட்சதப் பேரலைகளில் உடன் பிறப்புகள், உறவினர்கள், நண்பர்கள், அயலவர்களை இழந்து தவிக்கின்றனர். இந்த அனர்த்தத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள், உயிரிழந்தவர்களுக்காக அனுதாபம் தெரிவிக்கும் வகையில் நாட்டின் ஏனைய பகுதிகளில் வாழும் இந்துக்களும் பொங்கல் தினத்தை பிரார்த்தனைத் தினமாக அனுஷ்டிப்பர் என்றே கருதுகின்றேன்.

Peace hopes rise in Sri Lanka as rebel chief to meet Norway peace-brokers

COLOMBO (AFP) - Hopes for peace rose in Sri Lanka as the elusive Tamil Tigers chief planned to meet Norwegian peace brokers next week amid tension between the government and the rebels over tsunami aid.


Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran was set to meet Norway's Foreign Minister Jan Petersen as part of Norway's first post-tsunami attempt to salvage Sri Lanka's faltering peace process.


"He is going to meet the Norwegian foreign minister next week," Puleedevan, head of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) peace secretariat, told AFP in an email.

Petersen and top Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim are due here for talks with Sri Lankan leaders as well as the rebels to try to end a 21-month impasse in negotiations.


Three days before the December 26 tsunamis, the Tamil Tigers rejected Sri Lanka's latest proposal to revive negotiations despite international pressure to save the Norwegian-backed initiative.


Diplomatic attempts to revive the peace negotiations have been stalled over disagreements on the agenda.


The Tigers want negotiations on their October 2003 proposal for interim self-rule, while Colombo insists the rebels must have parallel talks on a final peace deal.


Tiger supremo Prabhakaran warned in November he would resume his "freedom struggle" unless Colombo agrees to discuss his self-rule plan for an "Interim Self-Governing Authority."


Scandinavian monitors observing a truce between the two sides since February 2002 have said increased violations and the absence of talks could jeopardise the entire peace process and plunge the country back into war.


Tension between the rebels and the government had been rising after the tsunamis hit with the latter accusing Colombo of adopting a discriminatory policy over aid distribution, a claim denied by the government.


Relations worsened when President Chandrika Kumaratunga blocked United Nations (news - web sites) Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) from visiting rebel-controlled regions of the north and the east.


Last week an affiliate of the rebel group, the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), also accused the government military of hijacking their trucks and diverting aid to government-managed relief camps.


On Friday the TRO however said its volunteers and the government's Special Task Force (police) met to iron out differences.


Puleedevan also quashed rumours Prabhakaran had been killed by the tsunamis athat left nearly 31,000 Sri Lankans dead.


"I can assure you that our chief is alive," he said in the email to AFP.


Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corp. last week reported the Tamil Tiger head and his intelligence chief Pottu Amman were among the dead or missing in the disaster. It later retracted the report.


The Tigers slammed the broadcaster for carrying the reports, saying now was "not the time for gossip mongering and malicious propaganda".





The Island, meanwhile, reported Saturday that Colombo airport security officials thwarted attempts to smuggle in 14 bulletproof vests hidden in a container carrying relief items.

The rebel leaders met global donors to discuss aid needs in the island's northeastern regions last Thursday.

World Bank (news - web sites) spokeswoman Chulie de Silva told AFP information from teams who fanned out across the rebel areas to assess rebuilding needs was now being compiled.

"All these people (making assessments) need to come together and then I believe the earliest they will have a statement will be from around the 21st" of January, she told AFP.

Sri Lanka is considering a slew of cash and tax benefits for tsunami victims and waiving their utility bills, while the International Monetary Fund (news - web sites) granted the country a respite in its 2005 repayments of 113.5 million dollars.
