எல்லா ஆண்களும் கெட்டவர்களும் அல்ல! எல்லாப் பெண்களும் நல்லவர்களும் அல்ல! சில பெண்கள் வெளியில் எல்லோரிடமும் சர்க்கரையாகப் பேசித் தேனொழுக நடிப்பார்கள். கணவனிடம் மட்டும் தன் பிசாசு குணத்தை காட்டுவாள். மற்றவர்கள் அவள் பெயரைச் சொன்னாலே. அவளாÕ தங்கமான பெண் ஆச்சே! இப்படியரு மனைவி அமைய... அவன் கொடுத்து வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்! மடையன்! வாழத் தெரியாதவன் என்று விமர்சிப்பார்கள்.

இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு பெண்ணை நான் சந்தித்து இருக்கிறேன். ஏன் இப்படி எல்லோரிடமும் இருக்கிறாள்? கணவனிடம் இந்த அன்பைக் காட்டக் கூடாதா? என்று எண்ணியிருக்கிறேன். உண்மையில் அவள் நல்ல பெண்ணாகத்தான் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும். அவள் பெற்றோர்! அவளை வற்புறுத்தி.. கிராஜுவேஷன் முடிக்கும் முன்பே திருமணம் முடித்து விட்டனர்.

நான் சம்பாதித்து கொஞ்ச நாள் ஜாலியாக இருந்துவிட்டு பின் கல்யாணம் செய்துக்க இருந்தேன். என் அப்பா அம்மா கட்டாயப்படுத்தி கல்யாணம் செய்துட்டாங்க! என்றாள் அவள். அந்தப் பெண்ணின் அம்மாவிட மிருந்து நீ இப்போ செய்துக்கலேனா... நான் விஷம் சாப்பிட்டு செத்துடுவேன் என்ற பயமுறுத்தல் வேறு. (இது அமெரிக்காவில் வாழும் இந்தியக் குடும்ப கதை!)

அந்தப் பெண்ணின் அம்மாவுக்குத் தன் ஜம்பம்தான் பெரிது. ஆஹா! திலகத்தை பார்! எப்படி... கரெக்டா பெண் கல்யாணத்தை முடிச்சுட்டா! அவ.. எப்படி நவராத்திரி கொலு வைக்கிறாள்! என்று அவளைச் சேர்ந்த இந்தியக் குடும்பங்கள் பேச வேண்டும். இதுதான் அவளது ஆன்ம திருப்தி. நாம் நம் வாழ்க்கையை வாழ வேண்டும்! என்ற எண்ணம் இல்லாத இவர்கள் அமெரிக்காவில் இருந்தால் என்ன... ஐயம்பேட்டையில் இருந்தால்தான் என்ன? இதில் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது அந்தக் குடும்பத்து மாப்பிள்ளை பையன்தான்.

வாழ்க்கை கிடைத்தவரைதான். அதில் இந்த இளமை இறைவன் கொடுத்த வரப்பிரசாதம். இந்தியாவில் இந்த இளமைக் காலத்தில் ஓடியாடி அலுத்துப் போய் பணம் சேர்த்து திரும்பி பார்த்தால் முதுமை வாசல்படி ஆரம்பத்தில் நிற்கும்.

ஆனால் அந்த அமெரிக்கத் தம்பதிகளுக்கு இளமையும் இருக்கிறது. வசதிகள் இருக்கிறது! ஆனால்... பெற்றவர்கள் பெண் பெயரில் வாங்கிய கடனை மாப்பிள்ளை பையனை கட்டச் சொல்கிறார்கள். இதில் ஆரம்பித்த அவர்கள் சண்டை இன்னும் ஓயவில்லை. இதில் அந்தப் பெண்ணோ கணவனை உணராமல் என் அப்பா கடனை கட்டு! என்று அடம்பிடிக்கிறாள். அவனோ... நான் இதற்காகவா யூ.எஸ். வந்தேன். இது சீட்டிங்! மாப்பிள்ளையிடம் வரதட்சணை கேட்கிறீர்களா? என்று சொல்கிறான்.

அவன் பேச்சில் நிறைய நியாயம் இருக்கிறது. அந்தப் பெண்ணாவது அவள் அம்மா பேச்சை கேட்காமல் நல்ல ஒழுக்கம் உத்தியோகம் உள்ளவனைக் கல்யாணம் செய்துள்ளோம். நம் வாழ்க்கையை நாம் காப்பாற்றிக் கொண்டு கணவனிடம் அன்பாக இருந்து சந்தோஷத்தை அனுபவிப்போம் என்று எண்ண வேண்டும். குரங்கு கையில் கொடுத்த ரோஜாப்பூ மாலைபோல வாழ்க்கை அவளிடம்... சீர் கெட்டுக் கிடக்கிறது.

பெற்றவர்களாவது... நாம் வாழ்ந்து முடிச்சாச்சு! அவர்கள் இளமையான இல்லற வாழ்க்கையை இன்பமாக வாழ வேண்டும் என்று நினைக்காமல் பெண் வாழ்க்கையோடு விளையாடுகிறார்கள். இதற்கு பெயர் விதி அல்ல! திமிர் என்றுதான் சொல்ல வேண்டும்.

இங்கும் இப்படிப் பெற்றவர்களால் சீரழிந்து... இளமையை தீய்த்து கொண்ட இளம் தம்பதியர் எத்தனையோ பேர்! இவர்கள் விழித்துக் கொண்டால்தான் விடியும்.

கீழ்வரும் கடிதம் எனக்கு ஒருவரால் அனுப்பப்பட்டது. இதுசம்பந்தமான விபரங்கள் யாருக்காவது தெரியுமா?

As two men are jailed for life for murder, BBC News Online investigates what is behind the spiral of violence which has claimed the lives of 10 young men in London's 80,000-strong Tamil community in the past three years.
Many of the young Tamil men growing up on the streets of London have emerged from a world of violence.

In 1983 the Tamil Tigers launched a rebellion in a bid to gain a homeland - Eelam - in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

Twenty years later a ceasefire was finally declared and autonomy was promised.

The murder of Suresh

But in the meantime 60,000 people had died and a whole generation of young Sri Lankan Tamils had become desensitised to extreme violence.

Many of those men and youths moved to London as refugees.

In an effort to retain some sense of identity many of them sought out friends and relatives from the same village or small town.

Some set up gangs and engaged in petty crime, mainly credit card fraud.

But in early 2000 the friction between these gangs finally boiled over.

Minor slights and issues of "respect" became exaggerated out of all proportion.

In the last three years 10 young Tamil men have been beaten, stabbed, shot or burned to death in London.

In June 21-year-old Senthamil Thillainathan was jailed for life for killing Supenthar Ramachandran, 18.

Mr Ramachandran was held against his will and made to buy his assailants a meal before being beaten to death, covered in petrol and set alight.

On Friday five men were sentenced in connection with the murder of Suresh Kumar Selvarajah, in Wembley, north west London.

At a press briefing earlier this month Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Murphy said the violence was "escalating" as gangs fragmented and power struggles developed.

Buvanasundarajah Thlagarajah, chairman of Newham United Tamil Association, told BBC News Online: "We are shocked by this violence.

"To some extent we understand it but we don't condone it. We are a peace-loving community."

Mr Thlagarajah said: "A lot of these boys are caught between two cultures and that means they are neither here or there."

He said the community welcomed the recent launch of Operation Enver, a police offensive against the gangs, and he said he felt the violence would end "when these youths realise they are on the wrong path".

Mr Murphy, who is leading Operation Enver, pointed out recently that the trouble stemmed from a tiny minority of London's Tamil community.

He said: "There is no more than 150 people involved, out of a community of 80,000."

Mr Murphy praised the response from London Tamils and said more meetings were planned with community leaders.

But Anandhi Suryaprakasan, of the BBC's Tamil Service, questioned whether police were getting through to the right people.

She told BBC News Online there was a distinct difference between Sri Lankan Tamils who came to the UK in peacetime and those who came after 1983.

Ms Suryaprakasan said: "Those who came before 1983 were mainly students or professionals, the elite of Tamil society, who came here to better themselves.

"But most of those who came after 1983 were refugees. They are mostly uneducated - a lot of the schools were destroyed in the war - and come from remote villages.

"But that is not to say they are not successful. Many of them have got rich running petrol stations, grocery, jewellery and sari shops."

The gangs have recruited youngsters with roots in towns such as Valvettithurai - known as VVT - and Urundari.

Ms Suryaprakasan said the youths had grown up in a society where violence was endemic, and many of them were deeply suspicious or antagonistic towards people in uniforms, who remind them of the loathed Sri Lankan Army.

At the recent briefing Mr Murphy stood in front of a huge array of guns, samurai swords, hatchets and daggers which has been recovered since Operation Enver started.

He said people were being murdered in retaliation for minor incidents, such as damaging a car, and added: "The level of violence being used is completely disproportionate to the actual offence given."

Suresh Kumar Selvarajah's killers may have been brought to justice but the Metropolitan Police cannot be sure they will not soon be dealing with a 11th murder inquiry involving the Tamil community.

The pioneers of a new technology centre must have thought the jungles of rebel-controlled northern Sri Lanka would be the last place to expect the powerful Blaster Worm computer virus.
Overcoming a lack of electricity and telephone lines was hardship enough.

Bombs, shells and mortars still are a common danger. But the new computer training institute in rebel-held territory soon found the Blaster Worm a new sort of weapon.

The centre's systems administrator had to make a dash to Jaffna to download an antidote from the internet and save the network.

"We were all panicking," says the administrator, Senthil Kumaran, describing the day the virus hit the institute.

He sped to the army checkpoint armed only with a disc and made his way to the government-controlled Jaffna without even a change of clothes.


Mr Kumaran works at the Vanni Institute of Technology, the first hi-tech computer school in northern Sri Lanka.

Like many Tamils, he left Sri Lanka as a child after the race riots in 1983 and went into exile in southern India.

He studied computer science in Madras and worked in IT in Bangalore.

Now there is a ceasefire he is back, along with the latest technology - routers, switchers, motherboards and all sorts of electronic components.

'Cutting edge'

This is no mere word-processing school.

"We would like to be the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) of the north-east," says Mr Kumaran.

He says the school has "cutting edge technology", with students learning the latest "C Sharp" technology tool.



Sixty students - half of them young women - are doing courses such as networking communications, web design and web-based development applications.

The only condition is that when they have finished their training they must remain in the area for two years rather than go abroad in search of lucrative IT jobs.

"I never even dreamed of these things; it's like a gift for us now," says student Sundarmoorthy.

"If the war had continued we would never have got these computers or any of these opportunities."

Fellow student, Vishnudas, adds: "Now we have computers and... professionals to teach us IT, we can compete with other countries in the future."

Warm welcome

The training course is possible only because expatriate Tamils in the United States, Canada and Britain donated the $150,000 needed to buy the equipment.

Many of the teachers are volunteers from abroad, like 21-year-old Kalpana Nagendra from Canada, who left Sri Lanka at the age of three.

"It was definitely a culture shock for me," she says. "I was afraid and hesitant how the people would receive me - they might say 'who is this girl from Canada here to teach us'."

But she found a warm welcome teaching English and is now contemplating permanently moving back to northern Sri Lanka to start a family.

"I feel at home here with my people; it's not that Canada has not welcomed us or the Tamils," she says.

Most people in Sri Lanka assume that the hundreds of thousands of Tamil professionals who fled the country's civil war will never return - especially the younger generation brought up abroad.

People like Kalpana and Senthil are the pioneers who seem to be proving them wrong.

கால்ஷீட் பிரச்னை காரணமாக விலகிய நாசர் இப்போது மீண்டும் நடிக்கிறார்.. வே`றாரு காரெக்டரில்! கவுதமிக்கும் மிக முக்கியமான ஒரு வேடம் உண்டு.

தமிழ் சினிமாவில் இதுவரை இப்படி ஒரு ஜல்லிக் கட்டு வந்திருக்காது என்கிறார்கள். வாடிவாசல் கட்டி, தெருவுக்குள்ளேயே காளைகளை இறக்கி அதகளம் பண்ணுகிற ஒரிஜினல் ஜல்லிக்கட்டை சென்னை 'கேம்பகோலா' வளாகத்திலேயே 'செட்' போட்டு அசத்தியிருக்கிறார் ஆர்ட் டைரக்டர் பிரபாகர். நாற்பது காளைகள், இருநூறு மாடுபிடி வீரர்கள் என்று மதுரைப் பக்கமிருந்து கொண்டு வந்து இறக்கி விளையாட விட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். மாடு முட்டி, கீழே விழுந்து கமல் உடலெங்கும் பட்ட ரத்தக் காயங்களின் வடு இன்னும் மறையவில்லை.

இளையராஜாவின் இசை பற்றி பிரமாதமாகப் பேசுகிறார்கள். கதைக்களம் அவரது சொந்த மண் என்பதால், 'பிளந்து கட்டியிருக்கிறார்' ராஜா. சொந்த குரலில் கமல் பாட்டு உண்டு. தவிர, தேனி குஞ்சரம்மாள், நடராஜன் என்று அப்படியே கிராமத்திய இசை. காஸெட் வெளியீட்டு விழா சென்னையில் பிரமாண்டமாக நடக்கப் போகிறது. விழாவில் வெளியிட படத்துக்கு மிக வித்தியாசமான ஒரு புதிய டைட்டிலுடன் காத்திருக்கிறார் கமல்.

மதுரை கூத்துக் கலைஞர்கள் நிறையப் பேர் படத்தில் நடிக்கிறார்கள். கமலுக்கு இயல்பாகவே கூத்துக் கலைஞர்கள்மீது ஈடுபாடும் அவர்களின் வசதியில்லாத வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிய அனுதாபமும் உண்டு. அவரது ஆதரவோடு உற்சாக வேகம் பிடிக்கிறார்கள் கலைஞர்கள்!

படத்தைப் பற்றி பரபரப்பான சர்ச்சைகள் கிளம்பியதே... எதிர்பார்த்த மாதிரி எந்த வில்லங்கமும் படத்தில் இல்லையாம். ஆனால், எதிர்பார்க்காத பரவசங்கள் நிறைய காத்திருக்கின்றனவாம்!

Oct 16, Colombo: Visiting Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham has warned that Ottawa would have to ban the LTTE if it fails to show full commitment to the peace process.

He said Canada has imposed restrictions on LTTE functions on its soil but has temporarily suspended proscribing it due to the peace process.

Minister Graham told the media in Colombo yesterday that Canada would definitely ban the LTTE if it continues to engage in acts of terrorism.

He urged the LTTE to re-enter negotiations with the Sri Lankan government and said the LTTE should adhere to conditions laid down in the ceasefire agreement and stop recruiting children to its fighting ranks.

"The ending of child recruitment, bringing a halt to political killings and respecting human rights must be respected in word and deed," the visiting Minister told the press.

Mr. Graham said the Tigers need to stop all forms of genocide and allow democracy to establish itself in the Northeast. The Canadian Foreign Minister stressed Ottawa's fullest support for Sri Lanka's peace process.

Speaking on landmines, he urged both the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE to join the Ottawa Convention, which bans the use of anti-personnel mines.

Minister Graham in addition denied that the Liberal Party had received financial contributions from the LTTE. He also stressed that the party had not received funds from organisations connected to the LTTE.

Mr. Graham met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe yesterday morning and is due to visit Jaffna today. He also met with Ministers Prof. G.L. Peiris and SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem and other government officials. His meeting with the President was cancelled by the Presidential Secretariat yesterday
