Sri Lanka Tiger top leader killing no truce violation

COLOMBO, Feb. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The international truce monitoring group in Sri Lanka said Tuesday that slaying of a top Tamil Tiger leader is no violation of the three year old ceasefire but expressed fears that it could have serious repercussions on the process.

Helen Olafsdottir, spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), told a local television that gunning down of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) political leader for the eastern province E. Kousalyan could have implications on the on-going ceasefire.

Kousalyan was murdered Monday night in an ambush blamed on the rival Karuna faction of the Tamil Tigers.

The government condemned the killing and said that all concerned must take care not to upset the truce agreement.

The Tigers have blamed an unnamed paramilitary group working along side the government troops for the killing.

The eastern political leader's killing came ahead of a planned visit by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Japanese international bank to the LTTE territory to discuss the post-Tsunami relief and rehabilitation funding in the LTTE areas.

The rebel sources said the meeting came to be canceled due to the situation prevailing after the killing of Kousalyan.

The main opposition United National Party legislator Rajitha Senaratne told reporters the killing which had happened in a government controlled area in the east has endangered the truce.

He said the Tiger leader had been unarmed while traveling through the government controlled area hence the government had a responsibility to give security cover as outlined in the truce agreement.

Brigadier Daya Ratnayake, the military spokesman, said the LTTEeastern political leader's travel through the government area had not been intimated in advance to the military as required by the truce agreement. Enditem

Canadian tsunami aid worker drowns in Sri Lanka's rough eastern seas

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - A Canadian woman, believed to be a tsunami aid worker, drowned Wednesday while swimming in eastern Sri Lanka, police said.
The woman, Sonia Maheux, was swimming with a German man and a Sri Lankan translator when they got entrapped in a current, said Upali Hewage, the police chief of Trincomalee, 230 kilometres northeast of Colombo.

Trincomalee was one of the areas hardest hit by the Dec. 26 tsunami.

Hewage said the victim was believed to be a volunteer aid worker helping with tsunami relief work in the area, although it was not immediately known which agency she was attached to.

Her German colleague and the Sri Lankan were recovering at the Trincomalee hospital, he said.

Hewage said Sri Lanka's seas are rough during this time of year and people were warned against venturing out to sea.

Prince Charles to visit Sri Lanka

BRITAIN'S Prince Charles is to visit Sri Lanka later this month to see first-hand the devastation left by the December 26 tsunami, his press office said today.

No specific dates have been fixed but the visit will take place ahead of the Prince of Wales's tour of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji scheduled for February 28 to March 11.

"It's a country for which he has a particular affection," an aide to the heir to the British throne said.

"In the wake of the disaster he has been anxious to do what he can to help. He has been receiving briefings on what's going on and has given generously to the appeals."

The tsunami, triggered by an earthquake off Indonesia, killed 31,000 people in Sri Lanka alone and destroyed three-quarters of the island nation's coastline.

Charles last visited Sri Lanka, a Commonwealth member country, in 1998

இலங்கையில் விடுதலைப்புலிகளுக்கும் அரசுக்கும் இடையே மீண்டும் சமரச பேச்சுவார்த்தையை தொடங்குவதற்கான முயற்சிகளை நார்வே தூதுக்குழு மேற்கொண்டு வரும் சூழ்நிலையில் அங்கு இப்போது புதிய சிக்கல் உருவாகி இருக்கிறது.

விடுதலைப்புலிகள் அமைப்பில் இருந்து பிரிந்து சென்ற கிழக்கு பகுதி தளபதி கருணாவும் அவரது ஆதரவாளர்களும் பிரபாகரன் தலைமையில் ஆன விடுதலைப்புலிகள் மீது தாக்குதலை தொடங்கி இருக்கிறார்கள்.

கிழக்கு இலங்கையின் மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்டத்தில் கருணா ஆதரவாளர்கள் திடீர் தாக்குதல் நடத்தியதில் விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் அரசியல் பிரிவு தலைவர் கவுசல்யன் உள்பட 5 விடுதலைப்புலிகள் பலியானார்கள். வன்னி பகுதிக்கு விடுதலைப்புலிகள் திரும்பிக்கொண்டிருந்த போது இந்த தாக்குதல் நடந்தது.

இந்த தாக்குதலின் போது குண்டு பாய்ந்து காயம் அடைந்த அம்பாரை தொகுதி முன்னாள் எம்.பி. அரிய நாயகம் நேரு என்பவரும் ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் பலியானார்.

கருணா ஆதரவாளர்களின் இந்த திடீர் தாக்குதல்களுக்கு இலங்கை ராணுவம் பின்னணியில் இருப்பதாக விடுதலைப்புலிகள் குற்றம் சாட்டி உள்ளனர்.

கருணா ஆதரவாளர்கள் மீண்டும் இதே போன்ற தாக்குதல்கள் நடத்தலாம் என்பதால் விடுதலைப்புலிகள் எதிர் தாக்குதல் நடத்த தயாராகி வருகிறார்கள்.

சமரச முயற்சியில் இலங்கை அரசு மீதும் விடுதலைப்புலிகள் நம்பிக்கை இழந்த நிலையில் உள்ளனர்.

இதனால் பெரிய அளவில் மீண்டும் தாக்குதல்கள் நடக்கலாம் என்று தெரிகிறது. கருணா கோஷ்டியும் விடுதலைப்புலிகளும் பயங்கரமாக மோதும் அபாயம் அதிகரித்து வருகிறது.

இதைத்தொடர்ந்து இலங்கை முழுவதும் ராணுவம் உஷார்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. முக்கிய அரசியல் தலைவர்களுக்கு பாதுகாப்பு அதிகரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. கொழும்பு உள்பட முக்கிய நகரங்களில் ராணுவம் ரோந்து சுற்றி வருகிறது. ராணுவ முகாம்களிலும் கூடுதல் ராணுவம் அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இ;ந்தநிலையில் புலிகள் அமைப்பின் மட்டக்களப்பு- அம்பாறை மாவட்ட அரசியல்பிரிவு தலைவரான இ.கவுசல்யன் நேற்றுமுன் தினம் இரவு அம்பாறை பகுதி;யில் சுனாமி சேதத்தை பார்வையிடுவதற்காக வன்னிப்பகுதியில் இருந்து ஒரு வேனில் அம்பாறைக்கு புறப்பட்டார். அவருடன் அம்பாறை மாவட்ட முன்னாள் தமிழ் எம்.பி.யான அரியநாயகம் சந்திராநேரு மற்றும் சில புலிகளும் உடன்சென்றனர்.

அவர்களது வேன் மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்டம் வெலிகண்டா அருகே வந்தபோது கருணாவின் படையைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் அந்த வேனை வழிமறித்து திடீர் தாக்குதல் நடத்தி னார்கள். இருதரப்பினருக்கும் இடையில் 10 நிமிடநேரம் சண்டை நடந்தது. அதில் கவுசல்யன் மற்றும் புலிகளின் கிளிநொச்சி பகுதி நிதிக் குழு தலைவர் தமிழேந்தி மதிமாறன், குமணன் ஆகிய புலிகள் பலியானார்கள். பலத்தகாயமடைந்த அரியநாயகம் சந்திரா நேரு பின்னர் மருத்துவமனையில் பலியானார். புலிகள் தரப்பில் கவுசல்யனையும் சேர்த்து இ;ந்த தாக்குதலில் 6 புலிகள் பலியாகி உள் ளனர்.

புலிகள் அமைப்பின் மிக முக்கிய தலைவர்களில் ஒருவரான கவு சல்யனின் மரணம் மட்டக்களப்பு-அம்பாறை மாவட்டங்களில் பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. கவுசல்யன் கிழக்கு மாவட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் என்பதால், புலிகளின் செல்வாக்கை கிழக்கு மாவட்டங்களில் குறைக்க வேண்டும் என்ற ஒரே எண்ணத்துடன் கருணா ஆதரவாளர்கள் கவுசல்யனை தீர்த்துக் கட்டியிருப்பதாக கருதப்படுகிறது.

புலிகளின் முக்கிய தலைவரான கவுசல்யன் கொல்லப்பட்டதால் கிழக்கு இலங்கையில் பதுங்கியிருக்கும் கருணா ஆதரவுப்படை யினர் மீது விடுதலைப்புலிகள் தாக்குதல் நடத்துவார்கள் என எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது. இதனிடையே கவுசல்யன் மீது நடந்த தாக்கு தலில் இலங்கை ராணுவப் படை யினருக்கும் தொடர்பு இருப்பதாக புலிகள் அமைப்பு நேற்று குற்றம் சாட்டியுள்ளது. கரு ணாவின் ஆதரவாளர்கள் என்ற போர்வையில் இல*ங்கை ராணுவத்தினர் தாக்கி வருவதாக புலிகள் குற்றம் சாட்டிவருவதால் அவர்கள் மீதும் புலிகள் தாக்குதல் நடத்தலாம் என்று தெரிகிறது. இதனால் இலங் கையில் பகுதியில் பதட்டம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.
