Message From the president (sltma)

Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance is the one and only media organization that consists of Tamil journalists from all over SriLanka including the North, East and Hill Country.

In the past, When Tamil journalists faced threats to life and harassment's and when the media freedom became questionable, no media origination in the south come to our support. Just because we are Tamil, none of our journalists was given scholarships, career trainings or basic facilities or privileges of a journalist. The need to form an alliance of ours was felt necessary when the hidden hands of state terrorism tried to muffle the Tamil journalists using arbitrary arrests, assassination's death threats, tortures, harassment's etc. As the result Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance was formed in 1997.

Our organization consisting of about 150 active journalists has been bravely facing the challenges, let it be the war period or the peacetime, and performing its responsibilities progressively. Our organization has with courage developed its structure and the capacity to confront any challenge or threat in any form to the journalists and keep fighting for their rights and the media freedom. In this regard we have established branches abroad and working with international media organization.

As a part of promoting the media, our SLTMA decided to honor our senior journalists who have been rendering their services to Tamil media for more than twenty-five years. On the basis we are honoring five journalist at National level and six journalists at Regional level, today.

We wish to expand this awarding program in the future. In addition, young journalists, media photographers and career professionals attached to media are to be included in this Awards program in future, too.

We wish to congratulate the worthy recipients of the awards. They have devoted more than 25 years of their life to the field of journalism through the darkest decades in the SriLankan history.

I thank all that have helped to make these awards ceremony materialize and gave their cooperation in this regard. I wish to salute and welcome all that have come to grace this function and felicitate the senior journalists.

At this juncture, it is my earnest appeal to all the sectors of the society and the international community to extend your helping hands and cooperation to us to achieve our goals.
