Operation Enver produces more results
29 arrests were made as a result of highly successful day long activity under Operation Enver yesterday (8.7.04).
The six boroughs of Brent, Croydon, Harrow, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forrest ran a three phased operation to arrest and disrupt criminal activity being perpetrated by a small number of Tamils against other members of the Tamil community.
The day started early with a series of raids leading to arrests for Offences including theft, possession of an offensive weapon, money laundering and drug offences. There was a wide range of seizures including over 50g of cocaine, swords, axes, daggers, a converted loaded firearm, a gravity baton(similar to an asp), £23,000 cash, £4,500 blank cheques, over £10,000 worth of high value goods, hundreds of credit cards and credit card readers and a £30,000 Mercedes car.
The day continued with a successful reassurance phase where officers Visited Tamil shops and premises promoting the launch of a new Tamil hotline, 0800 587 2935 and explained the reasoning for the earlier raids. The hotline has been set up at the request of the community as a way to leave details in Tamil, anonymously if wished, of ndividuals involved in criminal gangs, violence, financial fraud, intimidation and other crime.
Phase three began early evening with a co-ordinated Automatic Number Plate Recognition operation across the same boroughs, with more arrests ensuing.
Territorial Policing Commander Alfred Hitchcock oversaw the day's events, which he hailed as a triumph. He said:
"Yesterday's Operation Enver activity was directed at the few individuals running criminal enterprises, particularly those based on fraud and violence, who have been targeting and intimidating law abiding members of the Tamil community.
"The success of the operation demonstrates the result of the Met working with the Tamil community to prevent this criminality and where it has occurred to quickly identify and apprehend those responsible.
"The violence appears to stem from a small minority of disaffected Tamil young men and the majority of the Tamil community denounces those committing it. Whilst we have made major inroads into arresting and in many cases convicting those at the centre of much of the violence, today demonstrates how we have responded to intelligence and calls from the community, and are committed to working steadfastly to continue to disrupt violent and criminal activities and bring further perpetrators to justice."
