Death Crash: Family of Bail-Jumper 'Has Returned to Sri Lanka'

The wife and child of a Sri Lankan who skipped bail while awaiting trial over the death of a pregnant teacher have left the UK and returned to the couple's home village, a court heard today.
Northampton Crown Court heard today that Ratnam Yogan's family left the UK two weeks ago. Yogan himself fled the UK first to Germany on February 7, three days before he was due at a hearing to set a trial date.
Warrants have been issued for Yogan, who is accused of of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, and co-defendant Pushparajah Sinnappayal, who is accused of conspiracy.
Three other Sri Lankans appeared before Judge Richard Bray at Northampton today to try to reclaim a total of £11,000 left with the court as security and surety for Yogan and Sinnapayal, who fled after the February 10 hearing.
Thonganayagi Kamalendrian, Imperuma Raskanlan and Eladamuthu Kantasamy deposited between £3,000 and £5,000 each with the court as security for their bail.
Judge Bray ruled the three had not taken sufficient steps to ensure that Yogan appeared at court.
Giving evidence today Mrs Kalemendrian said Yogan’s wife had taken their young child back to the village of Rudaipur two weeks ago but said she had not told police because no-one had asked her.
Northampton Police refused to discuss Mrs Yogan's whereabouts, but a spokeswoman said that there were currently no plans to send officers to Sri Lanka to search for Yogan.
Miss Deborah Peaty, who was 30 weeks pregnant, died after her Vauxhall Corsa was involved in a multi-car crash on October 20 last year on the A5 near Potterspury, Northants.
After the accident Miss Peaty, 26, from Daventry, Northants, was taken to hospital where Charlotte Louise was delivered, but both were pronounced dead.
At an earlier hearing Yogan, of Ruskin Avenue, Manor Park, east London, denied the two charges and a further count of conspiring to pervert the course of justice along with co-defendants Ramasamy Nallaikkanthan, 28, and chemical engineering student Sinnappayal, 25.
