Tension and commotion continue to prevail
As tension and commotion that erupted after the rivalry between renegade LTTE's KARUNA and his leader PRABHAKARAN deepened, thousands of LTTE cadres were seen harbouring around the banks of the VERUGAL river, about 11 km north of VAKARAI throughout Tuesday (9 March 2004) and during early hours on Wednesday (10 March 2004).
Movement of civilians in this area has been prohibited and hundreds of government employees arriving from TRINCOMALEE areas were being thoroughly checked and subsequently released towards BATTICALOA.
A group of about 250 LTTE cadres returned allegedly from WANNI areas continue to occupy the north bank of the river for reasons best known only to them.
Another group of about 1000 LTTE cadres were observed assembling on the south bank of the river, according to troops who witnessed this movement.
Meanwhile, hundreds of families resident on both banks of the VERUGAL river were vacating their houses and the area en masse to proceed towards MAVADICHENAI and POONAGAR areas for reasons best known only to them.
Similarly, hundreds of non-LTTE youths from EETHALAMPATTU and POONAGAR areas had reportedly begun to leave for KURUNEGALA and COLOMBO areas due to fears of imminent reprisals or clashes.
In the meantime, a protest organized by pro-KARUNA supporters against the removal of KARUNA from LTTE's eastern leadership was held in the general area of KALUWANCHIKUDY on 09 March 2004 paralyzing the normalcy of the town and its suburbs.
Meanwhile, a scheduled LTTE protest in TRINCOMALEE this morning (10 March 2004) to sympathize with LTTE leader PRABHAKARAN has been cancelled indefinitely.
