Sri Lanka Rebel Leader Warns of Secession if Tamils Not Granted Self-Government
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka Nov. 27 — The leader of ethnic Tamil rebels said Thursday that the region controlled by his movement will declare itself independent if Sri Lanka's government does not grant autonomy to Tamil-majority areas.
Vellupillai Prabhakaran, however, denied allegations that the Tamil Tiger rebels are rearming and said he is still open to negotiating a settlement of the civil war that has killed 65,000 people on the island nation off the southern tip of India.
