INVITATION FOR THE PONGUTAMIL - 2005
The three and a half year old peace process has failed and once again we have reached the stage of a possible resumption of hostilities. Yet we are trying our level best to avoid a conflict situation. The Singhalese Governments in Colombo have failed to respect and implement the Ceasefire Agreements. The understandings that were reached during the six rounds of peace talks between the Sri Lanka Government and LTTE were also never implemented by the former. The appeal to resume talks on the basis of the Interim Self Governing Authority proposals were also rejected.
As a result, normalcy continues to elued a people who have suffered the horrors of thirty years of war, without a permanent political solution and the complete absence of normalcy, the people have been pushed into a political vacuum. Why, even to provide humanitarian assistance to the tsunami affected people through a joint mechanism, Singhalese Buddhist chauvinism and the Unitary Constitution became an insurmountable hurdle.
These events have, at the very least demonstrated to the Tamil people that the Singhalese Buddhist chauvinists are not prepared to grant even the very basic rights to our people. As a result, the Tamil people have lost all hope in trying to peacefully win over our rights by talking to the Singhalese leaders. We have reached the stage where we believe the only way a non – violent permanent peace could be created in the island of Sri Lanka is by the International Community recognizing the Tamil people's sovereignty on the basis of the latter's right to self – determination. It is to stress this that the people of the Jaffna have organized the “PONGU THAMIL 2005” event.
This event is meant to reiterate the resolution that was initiated by the Tamil people's representatives in Vavuniya on 27.07.2005. “PONGU THAMIL 2005” has been organized for the 30th of September 2005. The proceedings are to commence at 3 pm at the Jaffna University Grounds. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to this event.
