அவுச்திரெலியாத்தமிழ் இளையர்களின் 24 மணி நேர 'Share Refuge 2006'

What is Share Refuge 2006?

“Share Refuge 2006” is a fund-raising and awareness-raising event organised by the Tamil Youth Organisation (TYO), to highlight the plight of the many internally displaced people around the world.

“Share Refuge 2006” works along the same lines as appeals such as the “40 hour Famine”, where participants agree to undergo a sacrifice for a certain period of time in return for a monetary donation. In this case the sacrifice will involve no shelter (considering the event will be held in late April, it will mean having to sleep outside on a cold, frosty night) with minimal basic food requirements for 24 hours. It is hoped that such a sacrifice will raise awareness of the harsh conditions faced by refugees as well as raise money to help eliminate these nightmares of the 21st century.

“Share Refuge 2006” is a continuation of the successful “Share Tsunami” event of 2005. During that event approximately 100 young people went for 24 hours without food and shelter in order to raise money for the immediate disaster relief after the Boxing Day Tsunami.
The initial response to the relief needs of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, from the Australian public in general has been spectacular. However, the task of rebuilding the lives of these victims is far from over, as many of these victims still reside in refugee camps more than a year after the disaster.
This year the focus has turned to the ongoing needs of many of these tsunami survivors, the needs of over 600,000 other internally displaced people in Sri Lanka, and the victims of
Brisbane’s Hurricane Larry. The nature of the sacrifice has also changed from enduring conditions similar to those experienced by the survivors immediately after the disaster, to enduring conditions currently faced by these “lucky” survivors.

Proceeds will be distributed between rebuilding and rehabilitation projects for tsunami victims, and assistance to the victims of Hurricane Larry. One such project will be the construction of a ‘Knowledge Centre’ in the NorthEast of Sri Lanka – a project that hopes to shoulder some of the burden of educating the young internally displaced people and provide them with opportunity and the promise of a better life.

This year it is expected that there will be at least 300 participants at the event, and the park has a capacity to accommodate 500 participants. A large number of people are expected to attend the event and efforts have been made to involve the local media.
