சிங்களத் திரைப்படங்கள் மூலம் தன் நடிப்புத்திறனை வெளிப்படுத்திய காமினி பொன்சேகா சிறந்த கலைத்துவம் மிக்க கலைஞராக விளங்கினார். திரை நடிப்புடன் இயக்குனராகவும், டைரக்டராகவும் இவர் விளங்கினார்.

உலகப்புகள் பெற்ற திரைக்கலைஞரான லெஸ்ரர் ஜேம்ஸ் பீரிஸின் பல திரைப்படங்களில் காமினி நடித்து சர்வதேச மட்டத்தில் அறிமுகமானவர்.

1959ம் ஆண்டு வெளியான தெய்வ யோகயா என்ற திரைப்படத்தில் அறிமுகமானவர் காமினி பொன்சேகா அவர்கள். 60, 70, 80களின் காலப்பகுதியில் சிங்களத் திரையுலகில் கொடிகட்டிப் பறந்த இவர், பெரிதாக வளர்ச்சி கண்டிராத சிங்களத் திரையுலகை வளர்தெடுத்து மக்கள் மத்தியில் புகழ்பெற வைத்த பெருமையும் இவருக்குண்டு.

பிற்காலத்தில் தமிழ்-சிங்கள அரசியல் பிரச்சனையை வைத்து கொட்டி வலிகய என்ற திரைப்படத்தை இவர் இயக்கினார்.

வடக்கு கிழக்கு மாகாண சபை ஆளுனராகவும் இவர் பதவி வகித்துள்ளார். இனவாதமற்ற ஒரு கலைஞனாக விளங்கிய இவர் இலங்கை இந்திய கூட்டுத்தயாரிப்பான நங்கூரம், நீலக்கடலின் ஓரத்திலே ஆகிய தமழ்ப்படங்களில் கூட நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

இவ்வருட ஆரம்பத்தில், இலங்கை திரையுலகம், காமினி பொன்சேகாவின் திரையுலகப் பொன்விழாவை பண்டாரநாயக்கா சர்வதேச நினைவரங்கில் கொண்டாடியபோது, இன மத மொழி பேதமின்றி, இலங்கைத் திரையுலகின் அத்தனை கலைஞர்களும் வந்திருந்து வாழ்த்தியமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

அவ்விழாவில் உரையாற்றிய காமினி பொன்சேகா அவர்கள், திரைக்கலைஞர்கள் அரசியலுக்குள் காலடி எடுத்து வைப்பதை முற்றாகத் தவிர்க்கும் படியும், தனது அனுபவத்தில், பிரதான இரு சிங்களக் கட்சிகளுக்கும் தான் நிறையவே உழைப்பையும் ஆதரவையும் வழங்கியும்கூட, திரையுலகிற்கு அவர்கள் செய்வதாக உறுதியளித்த எதையுமே செய்ய முன்வரவில்லை என்றார்.

சிறீலங்காவின் பிரதான கட்சிகள் மக்களையும் திரையுலகையும் நிறையவே ஏமாற்றி விட்டதாகக் கவலையுடன் குறிப்பிட்ட காமினி பொன்சேகா அவர்கள், இனிமேலும் இக்கட்சிகள் திரையுலகிற்கு எதுவும் செய்வார்கள் என்று எதிர்பார்க்காது, திரைக்கலைஞர்கள் தாங்களாகவே முன்வந்து திரையுலகை வளர்க்க வேண்டுமென்றும் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

இலங்கையில் வாழும் அனைத்து மக்களும் சமத்துவமான உரிமைகளுடன் வாழ வேண்டுமென்ற கொள்கையுள்ளவரும், இனப்பிரச்சனைக்குத் தீர்வு காண்பது அவசியம் என்பதை சிங்கள மக்களிடையே வலியுறுத்தி வந்தவருமான பிரபல கலைஞரும் அரசியல்வாதியுமான அமரர் காமினி பொன்சேகா அவர்களுக்கு தமிழ் மக்களும் தங்கள் கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலியைச் செலுத்தி நிற்கிறார்கள்.

Tamil Portions of the Sinhala film <b>"Sarungalaya"</b> (The Kite)of Gamini Fonseka were shot in Karaveddi.

Mrs.Yoga Balachandran wrote the tamil dialoques and she is from Karaveddi.

I was offered a character as Brother in law of Gamini Fonseka in this film, but because of my shooting engagement in Pesalai for "Vaadai Katru" I missed this offer.

Sri Lankan film legend Gamini Fonseka passed away this evening at his Ja-Ela residence after a heart attack.

The 68-year-old went to sleep this evening but did not wake up at the regular time, which led Mr. Fonseka's family members to admit him to the hospital, family sources said.

Having won a large number of awards at local and international film festivals, Mr. Fonseka also acted in several foreign films.

In the nineties, he entered politics and was elected as a parliamentarian from the Matara district. He later became the Deputy Speaker. Mr. Fonseka also served as the Governor of the North Eastern Provincial Council.

Malini Fonseka, queen of the silver screen who had a long and much celebrated professional companionship with Gamini said,

"His performance had appeal across the board and I had the good fortune of being associated with Gamini.The cinema of that era is slowly fading away and the passing away of Gamini is another step towards that direction"

Tissa Liyanasuriya who directed Gamini for the main role in 'Getawerayo' paid tribute to the cinema legend for his contribution towards raising the standards of the workers of the film industry in Sri Lanka.

"In the early days there was little recognition for cinema artist. Gamini did a lot to change this .He championed the cause of professionalism untiringly"

Gamini dominated the pop as well as art cinema with equal ease

Gamini's mentor and internationally acclaimed cinematographer Lester James Pieris was very much moved with the passing away of his dear colleague.

When requested to share his thoughts with Sandeshaya, "Sorry, I am unable to speak at the moment," was all he said.

<b>Technician turned actor</b>

Gamini was the most important and versatile actor of the Sinhala screen. The Sakviti of Sinhala cinema managed to conquer the commercial cinema and the art film with equal ease.

Gamini began his career as a technician in earlier films of Lester James Pieris.

Gamini not only revolutionised the acting style of Sinhala screen, but also worked hard to change attitudes in the industry.

In a career spanning half a century, Gamini acted, directed and produced several remarkable films and composed lyrics before turning in to politics.

He served as the governor of the North East and as the deputy speaker in Parliament.

A veteran actor of the Sinhala Cinema, Gamini Fonseka passed away

Died at the age of 65 years he had been honoured as the King of the Sinhala Cinema.

He died this evening of a sudden heart attack.

Having acted in the largest number of films he had earned the awards for the best actor and the most popular actor several times.

Before his death he had acted in 110 films and <span style='color:brown'>also in two Tamil films. The films Sagarayak Meda and Nomiyena Minisun he directed were at the centre of controversy.

Also being involved in politics, he was elected a member of parliament for the Matara District from the UNP ticket in 1985. He represented the parliament till 1994 and also held the post of Deputy Speaker. Thereafter he was appointed the Governor of the North East Province in 1995 and he resigned from this post after two years.

His funeral will be notified later. Lanka Truth also mourns his sudden death.

<b>Cinema legend's funeral on Sunday at Independence Square </b>

The funeral of cinema legend Gamini Fonseka will be held at Independence Square in Colombo tomorrow.

Funerals at Independence Square are held only for heads of state, national leaders and political leaders.
The remains of Mr. Fonseka are lying at his residence in Ja-Ela, Ekala. They will be moved to the National Art Gallery at 10 AM on Sunday.
