Balasingham to visit Vanni next week

<b>Mr. Anton Balasingham, the chief negotiator and political strategist of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), will visit the LTTE held region of Vanni, northern Sri Lanka, on 23rd January in a fresh effort to resume the peace process. Mr. Balasingham will assist the LTTE leader, Mr. V. Pirapaharan, during the forthcoming meeting next week between Mr. Erik Solheim, the Norwegian Minister of International Development, and the LTTE leadership.
Mr. Solheim, who is also the Minister in charge Norway's peace process in Sri Lanka, during his visit to the island, will meet President Mahinda Rajapakse and other Sri Lankan leaders as well as the Tamil Tiger leadership.

Mr. Solheim will be seeking to persuade the parties in conflict to bring an end to the escalating violence that has seriously undermined the February 2002 Ceasefire Agreement.

Having already expressed serious concern over the rising tide of violence, the Norwegian peace envoy will seek a compromise between the protogonists on the contentious issue of the venue for the immediate resumption of talks on stabilizing the ceasefire.

When contacted by TamilNet Tuesday at his London residence, Mr. Balasingham confirmed his visit to Sri Lanka next week.

"What is of critical importance at this crucial juncture, is to try and bring an end to the brutal violence perpetrated against innocent Tamil civilians and create a congenial environment conducive for positive engagement," Mr. Balasingham said.

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources told TamilNet Tuesday that the Sri Lankan Government had assured the Norwegian government of Mr. Balasingham's security during his visit to Vanni. </b>

இம்மாதம் 22ம் திகதி பிரித்தானியாவிலிருந்து விமானம் மூலம் புறப்படும் அன்ரன் பாலசிங்கம் 23ம் திகதி அதிகாலை சிறீலங்கா தலைநகர் கொழும்பு சென்றடைந்து அங்கிருந்து சிறப்பு உலங்கு வானூர்த்தி மூலம் காரை 10 மணியளவில் கிளிநொச்சியை சென்றடைவார் என விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

JHU demands Colombo to stop Balasingham's visit

The Sinhala nationalist party of Buddhist monks, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Wednesday demanded the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) to stop the visit of Chief negotiator and political strategist of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Mr.Anton Balasingham , to Killinochchi. Venerable Athuraliya Rathana Thera, parliamentary group leader of the JHU addressing a press briefing Wednesday in the parliamentary complex said the present government is also trying to hand over the sovereignty of the country to the LTTE in the cover of peace process, parliamentary sources said.
Venerable Athuraliya Rathana Thera asked the government to name those who gave permission for Mr. Balasingham to visit Killinochchi and to Mr. Erik Solheim to visit Sri Lanka.

The European Union (EU) has imposed a travel ban on the LTTE. But the GOSL has not imposed any ban or restriction on the LTTE. President Mahinda Rajapakse should stop Mr.Anton Balasingham from coming to Sri Lanka, he said.

"JHU supported Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse at the last presidential election on certain promises. Mr Rajapakse should keep all promises given to JHU, said Venerable Athuraliyea Rathana Thera.

"The Speaker, Mr.W.M.J.Lokkubandara, has demonstrated his inability to prevent Tamil parliamentarians from holding protest campaign inside the parliament. Hence we demand his immediate resignation. Tamil parliamentarians are disrupting the sittings of the parliament preventing us from raising questions about the visits of Mr. Erik Solheim and Mr.Anton Balasingham. The government should take action against Tamil parliamentarians who are disrupting the parliamentary proceedings," said JHU leader.
