Don't Go To Geneva Unless .... World Tamils Plead With LTTE
[by Admin , Jan 31,2006]
Tamil civilian groups and individuals all over the world have sent an urgent appeal to the LTTE not to go for Talks in Geneva with the Sri lanka government, unless the TRO officers caught captive are released immediately. Five TRO officers were abducted on 30 January, around 2.00 pm.
Tamils have denounced this an act of terrorism by State Armed Forces and the paramilitary attached to them.
This act of provocation has happened at a time when both the government and the LTTE have promised to stop violence and confrontations, in order to facilitate a smooth meeting in Geneva regarding arrangements to proceed with future talks.
"If the government is unable to keep its word or finds itself unable to control its forces, then there will be no use concluding agreements with a government that will be prevailed upon not to implement them," the Tamils in other countries have insisted.
Five TRO officers were waylaid within 100 metres of the army checkpoint at Welikanda near Polonnoruwa district, after clearance to proceed on their journey. They were on their way to Vavuniya along with 15 others from the same organisation for a training course.
The paramilitary group that waylaid the TRO vehicle assaulted all TRO officers before bundling up the chosen five into its famous white van, before rushing away.
The other 15 were left behind, bruised and bleeding, after being assaulted to carry the tale back home.
The white van is the famous vehicle of death, the intelligence unit of the state security forces and the paramilitary groups, freely used for abducting Tamil suspects, finally ending up as, "involuntary disappearances."
Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation TRO was recognised by expatriate Tamils and international charity organisations for its mission of mercy during two decades of war when Tamils, in traditional Tamil areas quarantined by the Sri Lanka government's ban on food, medicine and other essential items, were on the brink of starvation. With the financial assistance provided by the expatriate Tamils, TRO served "a meal a day," to Tamils in war-zones and saved lives.
The selfless service TRO rendered to Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese, led by K.P.Reggie, its leader, after the Tsunami, won world's admiration, respect and recognition, and as expected the wrath of the JVP and JHU who could not match with an organisation to work among the Sinhalese on similar vein. JVP and JHU were clamouring for a ban on TRO for quite some time.
Tamil civilians have appealed to the International Community to use their good offices with the government of Sri Lanka to get the TRO officers released early.
