Police hunting London bombers shoot man in station

LONDON (Reuters) - Police shot a man at a South London underground station on Friday as they hunted for bombers who struck London’s transport network on Thursday.

Media reports said the man was a suspected suicide bomber and an eyewitness said he had been shot dead. Transport Police said they had suspended services on the city’s Northern and Victoria lines that run through Stockwell station.

"I saw them (police) offload five shots into the person on the floor," eyewitness Mark Whitby at the station told BBC television. "I saw them kill a man."

The attacks at Thursday lunchtime caused chaos but killed no one, in an apparently failed bid to repeat suicide bombings which killed 52 people two weeks earlier.

As forensics experts searched the three underground trains and a double-decker bus hit by small, near-simultaneous explosions on Thursday, police were called to a series of security alerts across the south of the city.

At one stage armed police surrounded a mosque in east London after a bomb scare.

They were also examining the remains of the devices that failed to detonate, in the hope of identifying the explosives and finding fingerprints or other clues that might lead them to the bomb-makers.

"They’re going to be looking for the details of the bomb and any other things that might be near it, DNA or hair," intelligence expert Crispin Black said.

"But I think the quickest-running part of this investigation is likely to be the manhunt," he told the BBC.

As the hunt intensified, commuters showed a phlegmatically stiff upper lip and got back onto buses and underground trains on Friday morning, saying they would continue their normal routines despite a second wave of attacks in two weeks.

"I just accept I have to get to work. It could happen any time. It’s not completely gone but you have to get on with life," said Frances Jones, waiting at a bus stop by London Bridge station on her way to work at a pensions company.

"I would still get the tube. If your number is up, your number is up," said Elisa Blackborough, travelling to work at a bank in the city of London financial district.

Police have far more clues from the Thursday attacks, including the unexploded bombs, eye witness reports and CCTV footage, than they had after the July 7 suicide bombs that killed 52 commuters and the four bombers and wounded 700. But security experts warned that the attacks could continue.

"For determined terrorists one attack is never enough... you want to create a series so that there is a feeling that there is a campaign, there is a feeling that this will go on and on," said defence expert Michael Clarke from King’s College, London.

Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to London and former spy chief Prince Turki al Faisal said the attack bore the classic taint of Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network.

Police also used the occasion to call for sweeping new powers, including being allowed to hold terrorism suspects for up to three months without charge as compared to the current two-week limit.

The pound fell against the dollar and the euro after first reports of the shooting, while government bonds around the world edged higher on safe-haven buying. The index of leading UK shares fell.

"The second wave of attacks are creating a sense of event risk in the market. There are concerns of a wider campaign under way and that is having a destabilising impact on the market," said Lena Komileva, market economist at interdealer broker Tullett Prebon.

A man has been shot dead by armed officers at Stockwell Tube station, as police hunt four would-be bombers.
Passenger Mark Whitby told BBC News he had seen a man of Asian appearance shot five times by "plain-clothes police officers" with a handgun.

"I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy - he is dead," he said.

Passengers were evacuated from the Northern Line station in south London. The incident followed four attempted bombings in the capital on Thursday.

Police have cordoned off a 200-metre area around Stockwell station.

Services on the Victoria and Northern lines were suspended following a request by the police.

Ambulances, including an air ambulance, have been sent to the scene at Stockwell.

Mr Whitby, told BBC News: "I was sitting on the train reading my paper.

"I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down!'



"I saw an Asian guy run onto the train hotly pursued by three plain-clothes police officers.

'Bomb belt'

"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him."

Another passenger on the train, Anthony Larkin, told BBC News the man had been wearing a "bomb belt with wires coming out".

"I've seen these police officers shouting, 'Get down, get down!', and I've seen this guy who appears to have a bomb belt and wires coming out.

"People were panicking and I heard shots being fired."

Former Flying Squad officer, John O'Connor, told BBC News: "The man shot must either one of the bombers or a potential suicide bomber."

Bombers "don't always carry sports bags" and the man could easily have been wearing a bomb belt, he added.

If he had been challenged by police and failed to stop they "have not got a lot of alternative", Mr O'Connor told BBC News.

Officers would be trained to aim for the head as shots to the torso could trigger a hidden explosive device, he added.

Londoner Dan Copeland was in the carriage in which the man was shot.

He told BBC News: "We were sitting for a few minutes on the platform, then we heard shouting from the concourse between the two platforms.

'Dull bangs'

"Then the man burst in through the door to my right and grabbed hold of the pole and a person by the glass partition near the door, diagonally opposite me.

"An officer jumped on the door to my left and screamed, 'Everybody out!'

"People just froze in their seats cowering for a few seconds and then leapt up.

"As I turned out the door onto the platform, I heard four dull bangs.

"I ran past an armed officer who was standing on the platform and ran up the stairs."

The worrying thing is the proximity of this person, assuming he was linked with the cells and with what was going on, to a mode of public transport, to the Tube station

The Muslim MP for nearby Tooting, Sadiq Khan, told BBC News: "In a perverse sort of way developments are quite welcome because what it means is that one of the four, and there could be many more out there - if it is linked, if the police have got the right person - has been stopped.

"The worrying thing is the proximity of this person, assuming he was linked with the cells and with what was going on, to a mode of public transport, to the Tube station. It's very worrying indeed."

Evidence gathered

After Thursday's London blasts, the bombers fled when detonators went off, causing small blasts, but failed to detonate the bombs themselves.

A massive hunt is under way for the men. Analysts believe evidence from the four scenes - at Oval, Shepherd's Bush, Warren Street and on a bus in Shoreditch in east London - could throw light onto the bomb attacks carried out on 7 July.

On Thursday, it is thought detonators went off, causing small blasts, but failed to detonate the bombs themselves.

The attempted attacks caused travel chaos across the capital, with several lines closed and Tube stations evacuated.

Scotland Yard commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the attacks had been intended to kill people.

லண்டனில் தற்கொலைப் படை தீவிரவாதி என்று சந்தேகிக்கப்படும் ஒருவனை போலீசார் சுட்டுக் கொன்றனர்.


தெற்கு லண்டனின் ஸ்டாக்வெல் பாதாள ரயில் நிலையத்தில் இச் சம்பவம் நடந்தது. நேற்று இரண்டாவது முறையாக லண்டனில் தொடர் குண்டுகள் வெடித்ததையடுத்து அங்கு தீவிர கண்காணிப்பு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந் நிலையில் இன்று காலை 10 மணியளவில் பாதாள ரயில் நிலையத்தில் சந்தேகப்படும்படியாகத் திரிந்த ஒருவனை போலீசார் சுட்டனர். இதில் அவன் பலியாகிவிட்டதாகத் தெரிகிறது.

இச் சம்பவத்தையடுத்து அந்த ரயில் நிலையத்திற்குச் சென்ற எல்லா ரயில்களும் பாதி வழியிலேயே நிறுத்தப்பட்டன. மேலும் அந்த ரயில் நிலையத்தில் இருந்த பயணிகளும் அவசரமாக வெளியேற்றப்பட்டனர்.

இது குறித்து பயணி ஒருவர் கூறுகையில், ஆசியரைப் போலக் காணப்பட்ட ஒருவர் ரயிலை நோக்கி ஓடினார். அவரை சாதாரண உடையில் இருந்த போலீசார் விரட்டிச் சென்றனர். பின்னர் அவரை கீழே தள்ளிவிட்டு அவரது உடலில் ஐந்து முறை சுட்டனர். இதில் அவர் அந்த இடத்திலேயே இறந்தார் என்றார்.

ஆனால், போலீசார் இச் சம்பவம் குறித்து இதுவரை ஏதும் தெரிவிக்கவில்லை.

நேற்று ரயிலிலும் பஸ்சிலும் குண்டுகளை வெடிக்க வைக்க முயன்று அது முடியாமல் போனதால் தப்பிய தீவிரவாதிகள் 4 பேரையும் அடையாளம் கண்டுகொண்ட ஸ்காட்லாந்து யார்ட் போலீசார், அவர்களைப் பிடிக்க வலை விரித்தனர். அந்த வலையில் தான் இந்தத் தீவிரவாதி சிக்கியுள்ளான்.

இரண்டு வாரத்தில் நேற்று இரண்டாவது முறையாக லண்டனில் நேற்றும் குண்டு வெடிப்புகள் நிகழ்ந்தன. இதையடுத்து இங்கிலாந்து பெரும் அதிர்ச்சியில் மூழ்கியது.

கடந்த 7ம் தேதி ரயில்களிலும் பஸ்களிலும் நடந்த தாக்குதலைப் போலவே நேற்றும் 3 ரயில் நிலையங்களிலும் ஒரு பேருந்திலும் குண்டுகள் வெடித்தன.

இந்திய நேரப்படி நேற்று மாலையில் வாரன் ஸ்டிரீட் பாதாள ரயில் நிலையம், தெற்கு லண்டனின் ஓவல் ரயில் நிலையம், மேற்கு லண்டனின் ஷெப்பர்ட் புஷ் ஆகியவற்றிலும் ஹேக்னி ரேர்ட கொலம்பியா ரோட் சந்திப்பில் பஸ் எண் 26லும் குண்டுகள் வெடித்தன. நான்கும் ஒரே நேரத்தில் வெடித்தன.

ஆனால், இந்த குண்டுகள் சரியாக வெடிக்காததாலும், சில குண்டுகள் வெடிக்காமலேயே போனதாலும் பெரிய அளவில் உயிர்ச் சேதம் ஏற்படவில்லை. இருவர் மட்டுமே காயமடைந்தனர்.

ஆனால், இந்த குண்டு வெடிப்புகள் குறித்து செய்தி பரவியதும் லண்டன் செயலிழந்து போய் ஸ்தம்பித்துவிட்டது. கடைகள், அலுவலகங்கள், பள்ளிகள் அனைத்தும் மூடப்பட்டன. போக்குவரத்து நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டது.

மக்கள் வீடுகளுக்கு உள்ளேயே இருக்குமாறு எச்சரிக்கப்பட்டனர். மேலும் இரு தற்கொலைப் படைத் தீவிரவாதிகள் மருத்துவமனையிலும் ரயில் நிலையத்திலும் புகுந்துள்ளதாக புரளி பரவியதால் லண்டன் நகரம் திமிலோகப்பட்டது.

இந் நிலையில் இன்றைய போலீஸ் துப்பாக்கிச் சூடு நடந்துள்ளது.

இதற்கிடையே நேற்றைய லண்டன் தாக்குதலுக்கு அல்கொய்தாவுடன் தொடர்புடைய அபு அப்ஸ் அல் மஸ்ரி பிரிகேட் என்ற அமைப்பு பொறுப்பேற்றுள்ளது. கடந்த 7ம் தேதி நடந்த தாக்குதலையும் இந்த அமைப்பு தான் நடத்தியது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இராக்கிலிருந்து ஐரோப்பியப் படைகள் வெளியேறும் வரை நாங்கள் அமைதியாக இருக்கப் போவதில்லை என அந்த அமைப்பு வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கையில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும் எங்களது அடுத்த தாக்குதல் பெரும் நரகமாக இருக்கும் என்றும் எச்சரித்துள்ளது.

இதற்கிடையே கிழக்கு லண்டனில் ஒரு மசூதியில் வெடிகுண்டு வைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதாக செய்தி பரவியதையடுத்து வெடிகுண்டு நிபுணர்கள் அந்த மசூதியை சூழ்ந்தனர். ஆனால், சோதனையில் குண்டு ஏதும் கைப்பற்றப்படவில்லை.

Senior Muslims have warned the Government that it needed to revise British foreign policy if it wants to put an end to the violence.

Dr Azzam Tamimi, from the Muslim Association of Britain, said the country was in real danger and that this would continue so long as British forces remained in Iraq.

He described the July 7 bombings and the attempted attacks in London on Thursday as "horrifying" but said it was not enough to simply unite in condemnation of the bombers.

Dr Tamimi, speaking after a Sky News debate in Birmingham, said: "The latest developments very clearly show this is a very big thing. It's not just a few individuals from Leeds. I think it's time everybody got serious and engaged in an attempt to prevent it. Part of that would be to understand what's going on.

"7/7, 21/7, and God knows what will happen afterwards, our lives are in real danger and it would seem, so long as we are in Iraq and so long as we are contributing to injustices around the world, we will continue to be in real danger.

"Tony Blair has to come out of his state of denial and listen to what the experts have been saying, that our involvement in Iraq is stupid." His comments were echoed by the marketing manager for The Muslim Weekly newspaper.

Shahid Butt said he believed the threat to Britain would reduce if it pulled its troops out of Iraq. He said: "At the end of the day, these things [violent incidents] are going to happen if current British foreign policy continues. There's a lot of rage, there's a lot of anger in the Muslim community.

"We have got to get out of Iraq, it is the crux of the matter. I believe if Tony Blair and George Bush left Iraq and stopped propping up dictatorial regimes in the Muslim world, the threat rate to Britain would come down to nearly zero."

Massoud Shadjareh, chair of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, also called on the Government to take responsibility for creating the "political environment" in which these attacks have happened.

He said: "Now we know this wasn't a one-off, we need to look at ways of addressing the underlying factors that created it. I feel it's urgent to start addressing these before there is further loss of life."

Growing Muslim hostility to Britain linked to Iraq war

British Premier Tony Blair's attempt to shrug off all responsibility for the July 7 attacks on London transport and lay all the blame on an evil ideology a perversion of Islam has been seriously contested by a collection of authoritative reports and assessments made by intelligence experts and pundits. A former Home Office adviser, Professor Sir Bernard Crick, told the BBC that it is nonsense that the government denies that there is a political as well as a perverted religious dimension in the London bombings. He laid the blame on the failure of Israel to follow UN resolutions after the 1967 war in spite of protests from the Arab and Muslim worlds. Sir Bernard said that it is also wrong to deny that the water in which the terrorists swim is plainly political and accused British governments of simply going along with grossly mistaken American foreign policy in the Middle East and of failing to protest against it.

London's left-wing mayor Ken Livingstone agreed with Sir Bernard. I think there were several levels that led those young men to come to London to kill. One is 85 years of Western intervention in the affairs of the Middle East. In particular, he said, ..for the last 60 years we have this terrible running sore of the dispossession of the Palestinians which is the single most important wound in the Islamic psyche.

The Madrid and London train bombings showed Iraq clearly dealt another major blow to the Muslim ability to tolerate hostile Western policies. A secret study leaked to the press on Tuesday linked growing Muslim hostility to Britain to the war in Iraq.This document, drafted by the Joint Terrorist Analysis Centre, a task force made up of officials from intelligence agencies, the military and the police, stated: Events in Iraq are continuing to act as motivation and a focus of a range of terrorist-related activity in the UK. The report was transmitted to the British government and foreign agencies and businesses in mid-June. Unfortunately, the experts also mistakenly held that there was no group with the capability to carry out an attack in Britain, prompting security services to lower their assessment of risk from severe to substantial.

The leaking of this report followed the release on Monday of a study by Chatham House (the Royal Institute of International Affairs) which also tied the London bombings to Britain's riding to war in Iraq as a pillion passenger on the motorcycle driven by George W. Bush.

Finally, an opinion poll taken in Britain revealed that two-thirds of the populace believe that there was a connection between the war in Iraq and the London bombings.

This perception is supported by two studies by the Saudi authorities and an Israeli researcher, which reveal that the majority of foreign fighters in Iraq are not members of Al Qaeda or any other organised militant grouping but are volunteers motivated by the war in Iraq. The Saudi study is based on interrogations of nearly 300 Saudis captured while trying to illegally enter Iraq and case studies of nearly 50 who died in suicide bombings. According to the US-trained Saudi researcher, Nawaf Obaid, most of the Saudis who went to Iraq were responding to calls by preachers to drive the foreigners from Arab soil. In an interview published by the Boston Globe, Obaid said the majority of Saudis were youngsters inspired to take action by watching footage of what is happening in Iraq on television and by reading reports on the Internet.

In the Israeli study, which relied on data from 154 foreign fighters who took part in the Iraq battle, Reuven Paz revealed that those who were not youngsters were largely Arabs in their late 20s and early 30s who had nothing to do with Al Qaeda before Sept. 11 and have nothing to do with Al Qaeda today.”
One of the key factors contributing to Arab and Muslim anger over the situation in Iraq is the fact that the US installed pro-Iranian Islamist Shias in power in Iraq and marginalised the country's Sunni community which has ruled the country since the advent of Islam. Because Sunnis account for 90 per cent of the worldwide Muslim community, they regard as a particularly dangerous development the prospect of the core country in the eastern Arab world being either fragmented into Kurdish, Sunni and Shia zones by civil war or transformed into Shia Islamic republic tied to Iran. The election of revolutionary purist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran's new president could have serious consequences if he makes good on his pledge to export Iran's “new Islamic revolution” to other Muslim countries. Iraq and countries in the Gulf suffered Shia unrest when the original Iranian Islamic revolution attempted to export its ideology soon after the ouster of the shah in 1979.

Another major contributor to Arab and Muslim anger is the rising toll of fatalities in Iraq. This week Iraq Body Count and the Oxford Research Group published their joint estimate that 25,000 Iraqis died in the two years since the US/UK invasion. Of these four times more Iraqis were killed by US-led forces than by suicide bombers or insurgents. This figure, which covers the period ending March 25, is twice the toll of 12,000 civilians given in June by Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabr, which does not take into account those killed by US and Iraqi forces.

The Iraq Body Count/Oxford figure also do not include the rising death toll due to the spike in suicide bombings since the Shia Islamist-led government took office at the end of April.

Although Arab political figures and commentators and wise Western analysts attempted to warn the Bush and Blair administrations about the dangers of toppling the secular Arab nationalist regime in Iraq, Washington and London ignored these warnings. Unfortunately Iraq is reaping the whirlwind of the refusal of Blair and Bush to listen to reason. .

லண்டன் குண்டுவெடிப்பை அடுத்து மேற்கு நாடுகளில் பாதுகாப்பு அதிகரிப்பு
லண்டனில் நேற்று இடம்பெற்ற இரண்டாவது தாக்குதல் முயற்சிகளைத் தொடர்ந்து மேற்குலக நாடுகள் தத்தமது பாதுகாப்பினை பலப்படுத்திவருகின்றன.

இத்தாலி நாட்டின் பிரதமர் சில்வியோ பெரலொஸ்கொனி அறிமுகப்படுத்தியுள்ள புதிய விதிமுறைகளின்படி, கணனி இணையங்கள்(இண்டர்நெட்) மற்றும் தொலைபேசி வலைத் தொடர்புகள் அனைத்தும் இனிமேல் கண்காணிக்கப்படும்.

சந்தேகப் பேர்வழிகளைத் தடுத்து வைக்கவும், அவர்களை மரபணுப் பரிசோதனைக்கு உட்படுத்தவும் பொலிசாருக்கு அதிகாரம் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

பயங்கரவாத எதிர்ப்பு நடவடிக்கைகளை ஒருங்கிணைக்க அதியுயர் அதிகாரங்கள் கொண்ட ஒரு வழக்குரைஞரை நியமிக்கவும் இத்தாலி பிரதமர் நடவடிக்கை எடுத்துள்ளார்.

குண்டுகளின் மறுபக்கம்
லண்டன் மாநகரில் 50க்கும் அதிகமானவர்களைப் பலியெடுத்த குண்டுவெடிப்புகள் இடம்பெற்று சரியாக இரு வாரங்களுக்குப் பிறகு நேற்று முன்தினம் வியாழக்கிழமை மீண்டும் நான்கு குண்டுகள் சுரங்க ரயில்களிலும் பஸ்ஸிலும் வெடித்திருக்கின்றன. உயிரிழப்போ அல்லது பாரிய சேதமோ ஏற்படவில்லையென்றாலும், முன்னரைப் போன்று தங்கள் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கை பாதுகாப்பானதாக இருக்கப்போவதில்லை என்று லண்டன் வாசிகள் அஞ்சுகின்ற ஒரு நிலைமையை இக்குண்டு வெடிப்புக்கள் தோற்றுவித்திருக்கின்றன என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை.

`பயங்கரவாதம்' ஒரு வெற்றிடத்தில் செயற்படுவதில்லை. இன்று மேற்குலகம் எதிர்நோக்கும் இந்த நெருக்கடிக்கு காலனித்துவம் தொடக்கம் பாலஸ்தீன நெருக்கடி வரையான காரணிகள் செய்திருக்கும் பங்களிப்பை புஷ்ஷோ பிளயரோ ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளத் தயாரில்லை. இஸ்லாமியத் தீவிரவாதம் என்று தாங்கள் வர்ணிப்பதை அரசியல் பிரச்சினைகளில் இருந்து விலக்கியே இவ்விருவரும் உலகுக்கு விளக்க முயற்சிக்கிறார்கள். உண்மையில், `பயங்கரவாதம்' ஒரு மதப் பிரச்சினையல்ல. அடிப்படையில் அரசியல் பிரச்சினையே. அது அரசியல் தீர்வையே வேண்டி நிற்கிறது. அரசியல் நிலைப் பாடுகளுக்கு ஆதரவாக அணிதிரட்டுவதற்காக மத உணர்வு தவறான முறையில் பயன்படுத்தப் படுகிறது என்பது வெளிப்படையானது. அதற்காக அடிப்படையில் பிரச்சினைகளில் இருக்கும் அரசியல் தன்மையை அலட்சியம் செய்வது விபரீதமானது. வட அயர்லாந்து நெருக்கடி கத்தோலிக்கர்களுக்கும் புரட்டஸ்தாந்துக்காரர்களுக்கும் இடையிலான ஒரு அரசியல் - சமூகப் பிரச்சினை. அங்கு ஆயுதப் போராட்டம் நடத்தி வந்த ஐரிஷ் குடியரசு இராணுவத்தினரின் தாக்குதல்களை `கத்தோலிக்கத் தீவிரவாதம் அல்லது பயங்கரவாதம்' என்று நாமகரணஞ்சூட்டுவதற்கு கனவிலும் நினைத்துப் பார்க்காத பிளயரினால் `இஸ்லாமியப் பயங்கரவாதம்' பற்றி எந்த முன்யோசனையுமின்றி சுலபமாகப் பேச முடிகிறது.

இக்கட்டத்தில் லண்டன் மாநகரின் மேயர் கென் லிவிங்ஸ்ரன் ஒரு சில தினங்களுக்கு முன்னர் தெரிவித்த கருத்தை கவனிப்பது பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும்- `மேற்குலகின் வெளியுறவுக் கொள்கையே இஸ்லாமியத் தீவிரவாதத்தை வளர்க்கிறது. வெளிநாட்டு ஆக்கிரமிப்பின் கீழ் நாம் இருந்திருப்போமேயானால், எமது விவகாரங்களை நாமே நிர்வகிப்பதற்கான உரிமை எமக்கு மறுக்கப்பட்டிருக்குமானால், வேலை செய்வதற்கான உரிமையும் வாக்களிப்பதற்கான உரிமையும் மூன்று சந்ததிகளுக்கு எமக்கு மறுக்கப்பட்டிருக்குமேயானால், பெரும் எண்ணிக்கையான தற்கொலைக் குண்டுப் போராளிகளை நாம் இங்கிலாந்தில் உருவாக்கியிருப்போம்'.Thinakkural
