This is the nightmare scenario that nobody in British society wanted to face.
Anti-terrorism officers have not actually used the words in public, but the massive nationwide investigation into the London bombings is one now focused on suspected British suicide bombers who believe their faith justifies their actions.

But this is not just a nightmare in terms of the threat of violence from within, the fallout in the coming weeks and months will have the capacity to severely test - perhaps in some cases test to breaking point - the cohesion of British society.

So why does it make so much difference that the bombers are, as now suspected, British?

In the hours after the bombings, Muslim leaders in the UK, joined by other faith leaders, senior police chiefs and ministers, launched an action plan long prepared for such an attack on British soil.

That plan focuses on keeping communities together by very publicly and loudly saying all that can be said to differentiate between British Muslims and those who would seek to use a faith to justify atrocities.

The strategy relied to some extent on the public seeing terrorism as a "foreign" threat - just as in years gone by the IRA threat could be presented as something that came from the unique, alien circumstances of Northern Ireland's sectarian society, rather than something that sprang from ordinary folk in ordinary neighbourhoods.

But the revelation that the four London suspects were British will confirm the worst fears of many Muslim leaders.

The four years since 9/11 has seen an extraordinary growth in Islamic identity in Europe. This has almost certainly benefited many communities which have, paradoxically, found a more confident voice amid the spotlight on their faith.

Many Muslim leaders point proudly at younger generations who have increasingly carved out a unique British-Muslim identity, taking the best of Islam and grafting to it many elements of European thought.

Simmering anger?

But at the same time, there has been a simmering anger which has become more and more visible in the wake of Britain's controversial anti-terrorism laws and the Iraq war.


In some cases, this is expressed through politics - such as George Galloway's sensational East End victory at the General Election on an anti-war ticket.

In other cases, it is religious with small radical groups mushrooming here or there, declaring Muslims must choose between Islam and British society.

Shahid Malik, one of Labour's Muslim MPs and probably the best placed among them by virtue of age to gauge the mood of younger generations, has said before there is a sense of double standards and injustice among some, particularly over foreign policy towards the Palestinians.

But he also says quite frankly there is a nervous reluctance among Muslim communities to admit extremism exists - much in the same way many white people cannot confront racism.

Radicalisation

There is however plenty of evidence already of how the process of radicalisation works - the most telling from Tel Aviv in April 2003.

It was then that two British young men, Asif Hanif and Omar Sharif, carried out a Hamas-organised suicide bombing, killing three.

The pair met at university and, it is thought, got involved in radical Islamist student politics where the perennial issue is the perceived injustice of Israel's conflict with the Palestinians, and the West's alleged hypocrisy. These groups can be catalysts in alienation, presenting Western culture as immoral and incompatible with a literal reading of holy texts.

Suitably inspired, they headed for Syria where, officially continuing their studies, they joined Hamas and made the leap from talk to fatal action.

In many respects, their profiles fit that of the 9/11 hijackers: these were young, educated men with good prospects.

In their minds, the decision to bomb was philosophically rational, based on an analysis of how they believed Muslims are treated - and the responses open to them. Backlash fears grow

So what happens now? If the apparent British suicide bombers are of similar stock - young British-born men who are not driven by desperation, then British society's ability to deal with this may be severely tested.

This is what Muslim leaders fear most.

Firstly they fear there will be a severe backlash against ordinary folk going about their business (women in Hejab headscarves are commonly targeted in hate attacks).

But just as importantly, they fear that reaction may, in turn, create deeper divisions in society - and create more opportunities for those seeking to radicalise the young.

Anxiety levels are up across the country and if this turns to anger then it could have an immensely destabilising effect.

Take the 2001 Bradford riots, for example, which had everything to do with a corked bottle of pent-up anger that exploded on the streets.

Crucially, the clashes themselves are popularly thought to have been triggered by white racists deliberately provoking young Muslim men to fight back. And when they did, the situation quickly got out of control.

Returning to present events, if Muslim communities are destabilised by the London bombings, the implications for British society could be far greater than a hot summer night's riot.

இந்த தீமை என்று அவர் வர்ணித்த ஒன்றை எப்படி எதிர்கொள்வது என்று பிரிட்டிஷ் முஸ்லீம் சமுதாயத் தலைவர்களுடன் அரசு உடனடியாகப் பேச்சுவார்த்தைகளை நடத்தும் என்று அவர் கூறினார்.

முன்னதாக பிளேர் முஸ்லீம் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்க்ள் குழு ஒன்றை சந்தித்தார்.

அவர்களில் ஒருவரான ஷாஹித் மாலிக் இந்த குண்டுதாக்குதல்களில் ஈடுபட்டதாக சந்தேகிக்கபடும் மூவர் வளர்ந்த நாடளுமன்றத் தொகுதியின் உறுப்பினர்.

ஷாஹித் மாலிக் பேசுகையில் இந்த குண்டுத்தாக்குதல்கள் பிரிட்டிஷ் முஸ்லீம் சமுதாயத்துக்கு ஒரு பெரும் ஆழமான சவாலைத் தோற்றுவித்துள்ளதாகவும் ஆனால் முஸ்லீம் சமுதாயம் இத்தகைய செயல்களுக்கு எதிரான போரில் முன் நிற்கும் என்றும் கூறினார்.

Leeds asks: What made them do it?

There is fear on the streets of Leeds - but perhaps more than anything there is shock that some of its young men are suspected of being the first suicide bombers to carry out their attack on British soil. But what makes young men from Leeds become so radicalised?

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal is among those who has spent 24 hours trying to work that out.

As soon as police raided two homes in the heart of his ward, he cleared his diary, preparing for the fall-out. The last 24 hours has seen him join other community leaders, from all backgrounds, in trying to work out why four British men would turn themselves into bombs.

But asked why they did it, he pauses and says: "I wish I knew."

"There are young people from all backgrounds and communities who are looking for reasons to do something wrong because they have nothing else to do," he says.

"This is one of the most deprived areas of the country, there are many, many problems with jobs, education and so on.

On top of that, there is to some extent a gap between the generations. But whatever the reasons, it's a disaster for this city and a disaster for community relations.

We as a Muslim community need to take a role in dealing with this. And that means the community should come forward and do its part, for the sake of everyone

This is the view that echoes around the city - although what to actually do is the hardest part. Many of Leeds' taxi drivers hail from the city's various Muslim communities - and the bombings are the talk of the cab.

One man said he feared for his family's safety. Another said he was proud to have brought up his children as "British first and everything else second". Much of what's flying around however is rumour and speculation.

Tension on the streets

In Beeston itself tension is high, the air full of talk of fanatics, suicide bombers and an on-going threat to British society.


No young people on Wednesday were prepared to be photographed. Many were furious at the presence of reporters on their streets (one national newspaper sent 16 reporters) - and few held back with the vitriol when approached.

One young man working in a corner shop close to the raided properties said he knew two of the four suspects well.

Nothing he had seen had however prepared him for what they had apparently done, he said.

But the young man, wearing traditional Pakistani dress and a beard, stressed that one problem had to be addressed: Muslim leaders were simply not listening to the young.

"Extremists don't walk into mosques and say 'Excuse me, would you like to join me in blowing up London?'. It just doesn't work that way," he said.

"But there is something else that is important. The older generations and the younger ones just don't talk like you think they should.

"There's a language barrier - the kids speaking English, the elders not - and then there are huge cultural barriers. Some of the kids won't talk to the elders, they think it's too difficult."

Victim culture?

One south Leeds youth worker told the BBC that the reasons for alienation were more complex still.


He said that among all the communities he worked, he had experienced a growing "victim culture" among some Muslim men - a culture linked to an international Islamic political scene that emphasises the suffering of Palestinians, Kashmiris and so on.

This was something he also felt far-right activists were capable of exploiting and upping the ante, although there presence was limited.

"Then the government aren't helping that either because they approach people by putting labels on them.

"These kids, whoever they are, want to create their own identities but are being told they are Muslim, white, black or whatever.

"The majority of the lads just want to be British but ever since 9/11 they've been pushed back time and again onto a Muslim identity.

"We're all shocked by what's happened - but a lot of us are perhaps, on balance, not surprised."

Catalyst?

But all of these theories only go so far in explaining what has happened.


There are gaps - and one of the key issues is what role did trips to Pakistan play in the suicide bombers' development.

Shehzad Tanweer recently studied religion in Pakistan. In Muslim communities, it's not usual for a young man or woman to spend some time abroad, particularly doing charity work in similar ways to white Brits go on a gap year backpacking experience.

But for some Beeston people, the Pakistan trip is the key to working out "who got at the boys".

"I took my kids to Pakistan to give them a sense of their heritage - and they were really shocked by the poverty," said one shopkeeper.

"It really had an effect on them. Now they put aside some of the money they might spend on shoes to go to charities back there.

"Now these are kids - impressionable, just as we all were in our time. It wouldn't take much for someone with bad intent to twist the minds of young men who have been to some of the poorest areas on earth and convince them that they must act in a certain way."

பிரிட்டனை உலுக்கிய தொடர் குண்டு வெடிப்புக்கு மனித வெடிகுண்டு தாக்குதல்கள்தான் காரணம் என்று பிரிட்டன் போலீஸôர் தெரிவித்தனர். இந்த மனிதவெடிகுண்டுகளாக செயல்பட்டது பிரிட்டனில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த பாகிஸ்தான் வம்சாவழி இளைஞர்கள் ஷெஷாகத் தன்வீர்(22), ஹஸீப் உசேன் (19) முகம்மது சித்திக் கான்(30) உள்ளிட்ட நான்கு பேர் என்றும், இவர்கள் 3 பேரும் பிரிட்டனின் யார்க்ஷைர் பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்றும் பிரிட்டன் போலீஸôர் புதன்கிழமை தகவல் வெளியிட்டனர். நான்காவது நபரின் பெயர் வெளியிடப்படவில்லை.

மொத்தம் ஏழு முதல் எட்டு பேர் கொண்ட சதி கும்பல் தான் பயங்கரவாத தாக்குதலை அரங்கேற்றியிருக்கிறது என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. ரயில்நிலையங்கள், மாடி பஸ்ஸில் மனிதவெடிகுண்டாக செயல்பட்டு நாசவேலைகளை அரங்கேற்றியவர்களுக்கு, பாலபாடம் நடத்தியவர் யார் என்பது பற்றி லண்டன் பத்திரிகைகளில் பரபரப்புத் தகவல் வெளியாகி உள்ளன. அதன் விவரம்:

சதி திட்டத்தின் சூத்திரதாரியும் பாகிஸ்தான் வம்சாவழியைச் சேர்ந்தவர் என்பதற்கான சில தடயங்கள் கிடைத்துள்ளன. அந்த நபர் கடந்த மாதமே பிரிட்டனுக்கு வந்து, மனித வெடிகுண்டாக செயல்பட்டவர்கள் தங்கியிருந்த வீட்டுக்குச் சென்று தாக்குதல் திட்டத்தை தயாரித்துக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். வெடிகுண்டுகளை உடலில் கட்டிக்கொண்டு எப்படி வெடிக்கச்செய்வது என்பது பற்றியும் அந்த இளைஞர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சி அளித்திருக்கிறார். தனது கடமையை முடித்துக்கொண்டு, குண்டுவெடிப்பு நிகழ்ந்த ஜூலை-7 ம் தேதிக்கு முந்தைய நாள் லண்டனை விட்டு அவர் வெளியேறிவிட்டார்.

இந்த சூத்திரதாரிக்கு இதற்கு முன்பு நிகழ்ந்த பல்வேறு பயங்கரவாத தாக்குதல் சம்பவங்களில் தொடர்பு இருக்கும் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. இவருக்கு சர்வதேச பயங்கரவாதி ஒஸôமா பின்லேடனின் கூட்டாளிகளுடன் தொடர்பு இருப்பதற்கான வாய்ப்புகளும் உள்ளன.

இந்த சதிகும்பலைச் சேர்ந்த எஞ்சிய இரண்டுபேரைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பதற்காக லண்டன் போலீஸôர் கண்காணிப்பு காமிராக்கள் மூலம் பதிவான கேசட்டுகளை சோதனையிட்டு வருகின்றனர். இவர்களில் ஒருவர் லூட்டன் பகுதியில் இன்னமும் பதுங்கியிருக்கக்கூடும் என்ற கருத்தும் உள்ளது என்பதால் அப்பகுதியில் போலீஸôர் தீவிர தேடுதல் வேட்டையில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர்.

இதற்கிடையே எகிப்தைச் சேர்ந்த கல்லூரி ஆசிரியர் அஸ்டி -இல் -நாசர் (33) என்பவர் மீது லண்டன் போலீஸôருக்கு சந்தேகம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. இவர், லீட்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் விரிவுரையாளராய் பணியாற்றிவந்தார். சமீபத்தில்தான் பிரிட்டனில் இருந்து வெளியேறினார். அவருடைய வீடும் லீட்ஸ் நகரில்தான் இருக்கிறது. தனக்கு விசா பிரச்சினை இருப்பதாக அக்கம்பக்கத்தாரிடம் சொல்லிவிட்டு அவர் நாட்டைவிட்டு வெளியேறியிருக்கிறார். அவருக்கும் பயங்கரவாதிகளுக்கும் தொடர்பு இருக்கலாம் என்ற சந்தேகம் உள்ளதால் அதுபற்றி விசாரணை நடந்து வருகிறது. இது தவிர மேலும் சில சந்தேகத்துக்குரிய நபர்களைப் பற்றியும் விசாரிக்கும் போலீஸôர், தொலைபேசி அழைப்புகள், செல்போன் உரையாடல் உள்ளிட்டவை குறித்தும் விசாரித்து வருகின்றனர்.

இதற்கிடையே லீட்ஸ் பகுதியில், ஒரு இடத்தில் வெடிகுண்டு தயாரிக்கப்பட்டதாக கிடைத்த தகவலின் பேரில் அந்தப்பகுதியில் போலீஸôரும், வெடிகுண்டு நிபுணர்களும் வியாழக்கிழமை சோதனை நடத்தினர். ஆனால் ஆட்சேபகரமான எந்தபொருள்களும் கிடைக்கவில்லை என்று போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

அடையாளம் தெரிந்தது: இதற்கிடையே லண்டன் குண்டுவெடிப்புச் சதியில் நான்காவது மனித வெடிகுண்டாக செயல்பட்டவர் எஜாஸ் அல்லது நதீம் பியாஸ் என்று அடையாளம் காணப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவர்தான் கிங்ஸ்கிராஸ் ரயில்நிலையத்தில் தாக்குதல் நடத்தியுள்ளார். இவர் லீட்ஸில் தங்கியிருந்தார். தனது சக சதிகாரர்களுடன் லூட்ஸன் நகரில் இவர் இணைந்து கொண்டார் என்று டைம்ஸ் பத்திரிகை செய்தி வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

Police have released a CCTV image of the four London bombers as they set out from Luton on their bombing mission.
They have also confirmed the name of all four men for the first time.

Mohammed Sidique Khan, 30, Germaine Lindsay, 19, Hasib Hussain, 18, and Shahzad Tanweer, 22, were pictured in Luton at 0720 BST on Thursday 7 July.

Three bombs exploded on the London underground at 0850 BST, and one on a bus at 0947. Fifty-five people died, including the four bombers.

The picture was released in an attempt to find out more about their final movements.

Peter Clarke, head of the Anti-Terrorist Branch, said: "The investigation continues on many fronts, but we have been very grateful for the contribution made by the public in response to our previous appeals.

"However we still need to find out more about these four men and their movements, both on the morning of the bombings, and in the days and weeks beforehand."

It is thought Hussain was responsible for the bus bombing, in which 13 people died, Khan for the Edgware Road blast that killed six people; Tanweer for the Aldgate blast, which also killed six people, and Lindsay for the Russell Square explosion where 26 people were killed.

Suicide bombers' 'ordinary' lives

Four young men were killed in last Thursday's bomb blasts in London. Initially they would have been treated as victims, but police have now confirmed they are the perpetrators of Britain's first suicide bombing.

He is believed to have been married with a very young daughter, with newspapers naming his wife as teacher Hasina Khan.

The 30-year-old had been a teaching assistant at Hillside Primary School in Leeds since 2002.

Parents at the school told the BBC the teaching assistant had been highly regarded by both children and parents.

"He was a good man, quiet," said one parent, speaking outside the school.

"When I told my daughter she said 'no, he can't do something like that'. I had to go and buy the paper and show her."

Another parent, Sharon Stevens, told the Press Association how he had been a "big supporter" of pupils and parents.

"He was really understanding and he did work for the children and parents."

During its last Ofsted inspection in 2002, the school's learning assistants had been singled out for special praise in dealing with a transient pupil population from a socially deprived area.

Mohammad Sidique Khan spoke about his work to the Times Educational Supplement at the time. "A lot of [the pupils] have said this is the best school they have been to," he said.

He added he believed it would be years before government regeneration cash could transform the deprived Beeston area of Leeds.

Neighbours told how he was not well-known in the Dewsbury Muslim community, but they believed he was a "very pleasant" person.

One neighbour said: "He didn't seem to be an extremist. He was not one to talk about religion. He was generally a very nice bloke."

Despite the tributes, Mohammad Sidique Khan detonated enough explosives on a Circle Line train to kill seven people.

Documents belonging to him were found near the Edgware Road blast.

His family later released a statement describing their shock.

They described him as "a kind and caring member of our family" and suggested he had been "brainwashed".

They said they "would like to sincerely express their deepest and heartfelt sympathies to all the innocent victims and their families and friends affected by this horrific and evil act.

"We urge people with the tiniest piece of information to come forward in order to expose these terror networks which target and groom our sons to carry out such evils."


HASIB MIR HUSSAIN, 18, FROM LEEDS
Teenager Hasib Hussain had been known as a tearaway during his early teens.


Hasib Hussain became devoutly religious after a trip to Pakistan
Newspapers reported how he would start fights with fellow pupils at the Matthew Murray Secondary school in Leeds.

He left school in July 2003 without attaining a single GCSE.

Around this time, he was sent to Pakistan to visit relatives. He also went on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, grew a beard and began to wear robes.

Despite becoming devoutly religious, he was arrested for shoplifting during 2004.

Neighbours said the 18-year-old had lived all his life in Colonso Mount in the Holbeck area of Leeds. One neighbour described the family as "very nice people".

He said: "We all knew them but I wouldn't say I knew them well. They were just a very nice family."

Hasib Hussain had told his family he was going on a trip to London to visit friends.

But when he failed to return on Thursday, his parents reported him as missing to police.

He had in fact boarded the No 30 bus in London armed with enough explosives to rip the double-decker apart, killing 13 people.

His driving licence and cash cards were found in the mangled wreckage of the bus.

His family later said they were "devastated" by what had happened.

In a statement they described Hussain as "a loving and normal young man who gave us no concern".

"We are having difficulty taking this in," they said..

"Our thoughts are with all the bereaved families and we have to live ourselves with the loss of our son in these difficult circumstances.

"We had no knowledge of his activities and, had we done we would have done everything in our power to stop him. "


SHEHZAD TANWEER, 22, FROM LEEDS
Shehzad Tanweer, 22, was born in Bradford but lived most of his life in the Beeston area of Leeds - little over half a mile from his friend, Hasib Hussain.

He was a sports science graduate whose interests included cricket and ju-jitsu.

In 2004, he was arrested for disorderly conduct and cautioned.

Newspapers quoted friends who said Mr Tanweer was quiet and very religious but did not express an interest in politics.

The Daily Mail reported he had been to an Islamic study camp in Pakistan at the start of the year.

His father, of Pakistani origin, owns a fish and chip shop near their home on Colwyn Road.

His uncle, Bashir Ahmed, 65, said the family was "shattered" by the revelation that he appeared to have been involved.

"He was proud to be British," he said. "He had everything to live for. His parents were loving and supportive.

"He was a very kind and calm person. He was respected by everyone."

Neighbours described the graduate, who studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, as a "good Muslim". Others said he was a "nice lad" who could "get on with anyone".


Yet Shehzad Tanweer detonated a bomb on a Circle Line train between Aldgate and Liverpool Street stations which killed seven people, including himself, and injured over 100 more.


GERMAINE LINDSAY, 19, FROM AYLESBURY, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

Lindsay converted to Islam and changed his name
Police sources have named the fourth suicide bomber as Jamaican-born British resident Germaine Lindsay.

He is understood to have been living at a house in Northern Road, Aylesbury that police raided on Wednesday night.

Germaine Lindsay spent his teenage years in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, like his fellow bombers.

He moved there in 1999 with his mother and sister, and moved away in 2003.

During this time he changed his name to Jamal Lindsay and began attending after-school classes to improve his knowledge of Islam.

Germaine Lindsay was married to Samantha Lewthwaite, with whom he is reported to have one 15-month-old child. Ms Lewthwaite is also reported to be pregnant with their second baby.

In a statement Ms Lewthwaite said she "never predicted or imagined that he was involved in such horrific activities".

"He was a loving husband and father," she said.

"My whole world has fallen apart and my thoughts are with the families of the victims of this incomprehensible devastation."

A statement issued by his relatives Andrew, 49, Sabrina, 28, Allan, 25, and Carly, 21 said Germain Lindsay "had a kind, caring and calming presence about him".

"He was a good and loving husband and a brilliant father, who showed absolutely no sign of doing this atrocious crime.

"We as a family had no idea of his plans and are as horrified as the rest of the world."

Lindsay is said to be responsible for the Kings Cross attack, where 26 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more injured.

The room is packed, the discussions go on way beyond the allotted time: this was a meeting of young professional Muslims in London at the weekend. The anguish and self-criticism was unstoppable as they struggled to find answers to how their faith could have nurtured such a perversion as suicide bombers in London. The object of their scrutiny - the chairman singled this out as a mark of accepting their responsibility - was not British foreign policy, but their faith. What do the Qur'anic verses about jihad really mean? How can extremists misinterpret them? And the imam, Abu Muntasir, patiently tried to answer - it's been a failure of our scholars, a failure of our teachers. The harshness of the self-criticism was painful to hear: this was a community flagellating itself.

The themes at the core of their discussions were about the failed transmission of Islamic values in Britain and the collapse of Islamic authority - long traditions of respected scholarship and religious leadership were all cast aside on 7/7 by these four young men - why? Over the coming months, every detail of these young men's lives will be picked over by anti-terrorist experts to map the experiences and influences that shaped their extremism. It's early days, but already some of the factors that need to be plotted on to this map are emerging.
First, the families of the three Leeds-based bombers were originally, in all likelihood, from Mirpur, part of Pakistani Kashmir. Mirpuris form 70% of the British Muslim population, and the figure is even higher in northern towns. Just as the dominant role of Saudis in 9/11 led to a spotlight on the religion and politics of Saudi Arabia, so attention will focus on Mirpur.

This rural, impoverished district provided cheap, unskilled labour for Britain in the 60s and 70s. Most immigrants were from subsistence-farming communities and had had little or no schooling. They made a huge cultural and geographical leap to settle in the UK - the dislocation is hard to imagine.

One of the things they brought with them was the perception of a long history of dispossession and marginalisation. Partition brought terrible bloodshed and the division of Kashmir between Pakistan and India. (This was the issue cited until very recently as the most pressing political priority in the UK by the majority of British Muslims.) Within Pakistan, Mirpur is to the more dominant Punjabis what the Irish have historically been to the British, explained one Mirpuri.

In the 80s the remittances began to flow in, fuelling an extraordinary boom in Mirpur, bringing computers, televisions, the internet, satellite dishes, microwaves and fridges. One of the strongest Mirpuri traditions is that you marry your first cousin, so there is a constant exchange with the UK to renew the Mirpuri influence for the next generation. Mirpur has been an example - and there are others the world over - of the painful disruption in deeply traditional communities of a sudden influx of wealth and interface with modernity.

The narrative of dispossession gained new force in the 80s amid the collapse of the industries in which the first generation had come to work. Men who had worked long hours in the textiles and steel industry - and had been, arguably, more integrated into white workforces than their taxi-driver and curry-house sons - found themselves redundant. The more recent oppression and humiliation of Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan would have resonated powerfully with these collective memories of Yorkshire Muslims, passed from grandfather and father to son.

A second critical issue that needs to be plotted on to this map is that the vast majority of Mirpuris adhere to a tradition of Sufi Islam called Barelwi. One of the Indian Islamic revival movements of the late 19th century, Barelwi life revolves around holy elders known as pirs; their graves become shrines and places of pilgrimage.

The problem, which has been well known within many Muslim circles, is that Barelwism has particularly struggled to translate itself effectively into British urban life. There are very few English-speaking Barelwi imams. They have steered clear of national organisations such as the Muslim Council of Britain, and even set up their own umbrella group recently. They are treated with disdain by the Wahhabi and Muslim Brotherhood-influenced groups who are more vocal in the British Muslim community. The writ of the MCB's Iqbal Sacranie, a Malawi-born Indian Muslim, doesn't reach into such introverted communities. One wry comment at the weekend was: if Sacranie is visiting the Leeds Barelwis now that's great, but it's probably the first time.

What has been obvious to thoughtful second-generation Barelwis themselves is that they are losing the young. The mosques are tightly controlled by the old patriarchal elders, who hire their Urdu-speaking imams from the home village. The kids come to prayers, don't understand much of what they see or hear and drift off to find an Islam that can answer their questions.

A profound disconnection has opened up between the communal experience of political and economic dispossession and the pious, otherworldly Barelwi traditions. As one Yorkshireman from a Barelwi background, Azhar Hussain, said: "When I was 17 and got to university and began to take religion more seriously I went to hear all the Islamic groups to see which one made the most sense. The Barelwis are not on university campuses; they can't answer those questions."

In the early 90s Arabs told Navid Akhtar, a broadcast journalist from a Barelwi background, that they had spotted a constituency in these disaffected young Muslims; "They called them 'orphans of Islam'," Akhtar says.

To compound the crisis of identity for male teenagers, Muslim girls are thriving with their new-found opportunities in the UK as they pull steadily ahead of their male counterparts at GCSE level and in the numbers going on to higher education.

Some in the Muslim community have been struggling with these problems for years, trying to challenge recalcitrant mosque committees, trying to set up youth projects; they have been well aware of the threat of extremism. "We've been too afraid," a Muslim living in a northern town told me. "There are so many frustrated, angry men who tell me, 'They're doing it in Iraq, why can't we do it to them?' They convince themselves that this is Islamic. I find it frustrating that our community hasn't tackled this. We have to talk to them about these issues - let them get their anger out."

For this man, who does voluntary community work, what lies ahead is an impossible tightrope of near-illegality if he is to take on the challenge of extremism in his community - he agrees and likens his position to that of someone who works with drug addicts. We are told that what lies ahead is a battle of ideas. If so, this kind of community volunteer is on the frontline. It will be his judgment call as to when he can guide a disorientated, angry young man or whether he has to shop him to the police.
