Balance of forces tilt against rebels in LTTE
PK Balachanddran Colombo, March 5 The split in the LTTE is for real, despite public statements to the contrary from the eastern rebel leader Col Karuna and the head of the LTTE's political wing, SP Tamilselvan. And as of now, the balance of forces is tilted against the rebels and in favour of the north-dominated, Wanni-based leadership of the militant organization, presided over by the redoubtable Velupillai Prabhakaran. It is not yet clear if Karuna has the support of the entirety of the Batticalao-Amparai (BA) district unit, which he claims to represent. Nor is it certain if he has the support of the people of BA district, whose grievances he has highlighted. But forces outside are clearly not on Karuna's side. The Sri Lankan government has refused to entertain Karuna's request to enter into a separate ceasefire agreement (CFA) with the BA district unit as represented by him. The government, meaning the President and the Prime Minister, have both said that the CFA with Prabhakaran will stand. The Sri Lankan armed forces have refused to stop Karuna's rivals from moving from the east to the safety of the north, or to allow his cadres to cross over from the hostile north to the safety of the east. The armed forces have thus sided with Prabhakaran. The armed forces also gave Karuna a choice which he could not accept without loss of face and prestige. They said that protection would be give to him and his men, if they surrendered to the forces! Though Karuna is trying to give the impression that he is opposing only the north-dominated "Wanni leadership" of the LTTE and not Supremo Prabhakaran himself, it is apparent that he is taking on Prabhakaran also, because nothing is done in the monolithic LTTE without the express sanction of the Supremo himself. <b>Karuna's drawbacks</b> One of the main drawbacks for Karuna is the fact that many senior political and military leaders of the BA unit have left him and moved with their families to the Wanni to be with Prabhakaran. Though he is said to have 6,000 military cadres under him, it is not certain how many are battle worthy and how many will opt to be with him when the chips are down. One informed Batticalao source told Hindustan Times that quite a few of his cadres were kids with little or no intensive training. People in Batticaloa also wonder Karuna has the kind of money that the northern group has, though the BA unit has also been collecting taxes and extorting money. The BA units' ability to garner money from the Diaspora is limited because the typical well-heeled Sri Lankan Tamil member of the Diaspora is from the north, particularly, Jaffna, which is the stronghold of Prabhakaran. Many wonder if, after fighting for a united Tamil cause for two decades, shedding so much blood and taking so many deprivations for its sake, the people of BA would abandon the movement led by Prabhakaran and plumb for a Karuna, who after all, cannot hold a candle to Prabhakaran whether in the military or political field. The other question in peoples' minds is: Would they do this when the Prabhakaran-led movement has the respect and support of the international community and the Sri Lankan government? <b>Karuna's strengths</b> However, Karuna does have is a cause the legitimate cause of the BA or Eastern Tamils who have, for long, felt discriminated against by the Northern Jaffna-led Tamils.The Jaffna Tamils not only dominate the Sri Lankan Tamil social structure but the LTTE too. For the sake of the liberation of the Tamils from the Sri Lankan state and Sinhala majoritarian subjugation and Muslim encroachment, the BA and other eastern Tamils sunk their differences with the North and wholeheartedly supported the independent Tamil Eelam or autonomous Tamil Homeland cause two decades ago. But as it turned out, even in the LTTE, the northern or Jaffna Tamils began to rule the roost. So long as there was war, the east-north conflict did not surface. But the two years of peace since February 2002, has brought it out. Grievances began to be felt and aired. And rebellion followed when complaints fell on deaf ears. The BA political unit on Thursday distributed a one page pamphlet listing the grievances of the BA unit as well as well that of the BA people. Entitled "Betrayal of the Batticaloa-Amparai Leadership" it says that more 4,550 fighting cadres from the BA have so far laid down their lives in the battlefield for the liberation of the Tamil Homeland and the protection of the Tamil National Leadership (meaning Tiger chietain Prabhakaran) and yet the BA area remains economically undeveloped and poor. Even now, over 600 cadres from BA are in the north sweating it out in the bunkers and the forward defence lines while cadres from the north are utilizing the peace for their advancement both at home and abroad. Some are going on pleasure trips abroad. Not a single person from the BA area is in the top slot of the 30-odd divisions of the LTTE administration. But over 30 cadres from the BA are providing protection to the Northern leaders so that they could move about unafraid in their posh vehicles. The pamphlet said that parents in the BA district gave their boys and girls to the LTTE's fighting forces on the understanding that they would be used for the defence of the district and its economic development. But this was not done, and that was why, the BA leadership recently refused to obey the northern leadership's order to send thousands of fighting cadres to the north. The pamphlet accused the Northern leadership of preparing for war, and encouraging the Intelligence Wing led by Pottu Amman to indulge in hijacking of vehicles and killing rival electoral candidates. When complaints were lodged with the "Wanni leadership" no action was taken, the pamphlet charged. It then went on to appeal to the people of the BA district to be conscious of the malevolent activities of the Wanni leadership and act accordingly. <b>At the cross roads</b> The people of BA and the members of the BA LTTE unit are now at the cross roads. They have to choose between the larger interest of safeguarding the Tamil struggle led by Velupillai Prabhakaran, which has reached a crucial stage, and their regional interest. They would have to ponder whether their long term interests will be served by going with Prabhakaran or Karuna. They have to decide on who has the clout in the current Sri Lankan and world political environment, Prabhakaran or Karuna?. Since the Norwegian peace facilitators have refused to mediate between the two warring factions, intellectuals and teachers of the Eastern University at Batticalao are attempting to bring about a rapprochement between Karuna and Prabhakaran. But there are doubts if such efforts will succeed because the rift is apparently too wide for Prabhakaran to forget and forgive. He is facing a major challenge to his supremacy not only in his organization but in society as well, since he has pitched for the high status of "Sole Representative of the Tamils." The critical factor is that Karuna has a claim to a territorial and population base and the BA district is too important to be left to a rebel or a person of doubtful loyalty. Political observers do not rule out a short term papering over of differences, but seriously doubt if the arrangement will last. Thanx: Hindustan Times

இந்த போர் நிறுத்த ஒப்பந்த நோக்கத்தில் ஒன்று ; நாடு நாடாக கூட்டி வந்து நாமெல்லாம் (வெள்ளையர்கள்)எப்படி வாழுறம் பாருங்கோ என காட்டி இப்படியான குழப்ப நிலையை உருவாக்கிறதுகிறதுக்குத்தான்....?!!! புரிஞ்சா சரி. :|

எது என்னவோ நீங்களும் நாமயும் கத்தி பிரியோசனம் இல்லை.... அது உங்களுக்கும் தெரியும் எங்களுக்கும் தெரியும் அவர்களுக்கும் தெரியும்.....  ஆனால் என்னவோ நடக்கிறது அதுக்கு நாம என்ன செய்வது.... :roll: தலைவர் ஒருவர்தான் அது எமக்கும் எதிரிக்கும் உலகுக்கும் தெரியும் அல்லது ஏதோ சூது நடந்தால் எம்ஈழதமிழ்அழியும் தமிரை தமிழே அளிப்போம் அது தவிர்கமுடியாதது கொஞ்சம் பொறுமையாயிருங்கள்....தலைமைகளே பிளைகள் செய்ய வாய்பிருக்குமா.....தமிழரும் ஏமாளிகள் அல்ல ஈழதமிழ்தவைவர்களும் ஏமாளிகள் அல்ல (விடுதலை தலைவர்கள்).... 8)
