COLOMBO - De Srilankaanse regering wil dat de Noorse minister Erik Solheim niet langer de belangrijkste bemiddelaar is in het vredesproces op het eiland. Volgens Srilankaanse media maandag is Colombo van mening dat Solheim zijn hoofd te veel laat hangen naar de rebellengroep Tamil Tijgers (LTTE). Colombo heeft aan Oslo laten weten bezoeken van gezant Solheim niet langer op prijs te stellen.


Solheim, een prominent politicus en nu minister van Internationale Samenwerking, is al vijf jaar lang de belangrijkste westerse bemiddelaar in het conflict op Sri Lanka. Daar strijdt de LTTE al sinds 1983 voor een eigen Tamilstaat in het noorden en oosten van het eiland. De strijd heeft al bijna 70.000 mensen het leven gekost.

Sinds 2002 is er een staakt-het-vuren van kracht dat mede door Solheim werd bewerkstelligd. In de afgelopen maanden is het geweld weer behoorlijk opgelaaid, vooral sinds de komst van de nieuwe president Rajapakse. Die geldt als een hardliner in het conflict.

De rebellen, die ongeveer een zevende van het eiland controleren, hebben gezegd wel met Rajapakse aan tafel te willen zitten, maar alleen als hij ook echt bereid is compromissen te sluiten. Gebeurt dat niet, dan pakken de Tamil Tijgers de wapens weer op, zo dreigden ze.
