* LTTE flags in govt-held areas are a violation of the ceasefire, says SLMM
Thursday, October 2, 2003, 8:55 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
The SLMM clearly stated that the "hoisting of the LTTE flag as a provocative act is a violation of the Ceasefire Agreement."
Oct 02, Colombo: The ceasefire monitors yesterday said the hoisting of the LTTE flag on public buildings and in public places in government-controlled areas in the Northeast is a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Issuing a statement, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) referred to what it described as inaccurate news coverage and wrong quotes taken from a meeting between the SLMM and the political leadership of LTTE in Kilinochchi last Sunday.
It stated, SLMM is not an organisation that has the authority or the role to recognize flags, although, of course, it pays due respect to flags of different organizations, including the flag of LTTE.
The Head of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Major General Tryggve Tellefsen did not justify the hoisting of LTTE flags on public buildings in government-controlled areas.
SLMM has made a ruling about hoisting of the LTTE flag on public buildings and in public places in government-control areas. That ruling states clearly that such hoisting of the LTTE flag as a provocative act is a violation of the Ceasefire Agreement.
