After much suffering, I finally resolved the infamous problem of IE6 shutting down (msvcrt.dll message):
It seems the problem is caused by some programs removing the file msvcrt.dll in the Windows system and replacing it with a different, older version of that file with the same name. I solved my problem completely by simply re-installing the correct dll file. The file causing the problem was msvcrt.dll version 6.10.8293.0. I replaced it with msvcrt.dll version 6.00.8397.0. .dll files may be obtained from such sites as www.dll-files.com
