[size=24]Martin trip to Sri Lanka sparks controversy

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin says he will go to Thailand and Sri Lanka next week to see for himself the damage done by the tsunami that struck South and Southeast Asia on Dec. 26.

Martin hasn't even set foot in Sri Lanka, but already he's caught in a dispute over which areas he should - and should not - visit.

Martin who said Monday he wants "to go to those areas where Canadians are involved," has already committed to visiting Canadian troops on Sri Lanka's east coast.

But Tamil rebel leaders in the northeast want to see him too.

In an interview with CBC News the political leader of the Tamil Tigers, S.P. Thamilshelvan put it this way. "Tamil people everywhere, will be very disappointed, if the prime minister does not visit Tamil-controlled areas," he said.

An estimated 300,000 Tamils live in Canada, more than anywhere else in the world outside of Sri Lanka. And many are Liberal supporters. But an official Canadian visit to rebel-controlled areas would not sit well with the government in Colombo.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner Geetha De Silva said she \"respects the decision\" of the prime minister to visit Canadian troops, but doesn't think it would be a good idea to venture into the areas controlled by the Tamil Tigers.

Other high-profile visitors to the area, such as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan did not tour the rebel-held north. The UN considers the Tamil Tigers a terrorist organization, however Canada has not put the group on its own terror watch list.

Liberal MP John McKay represents the Toronto riding of Scarborough-Guildwood, which has thousands of Tamil constituents. He says Canadian involvement in Sri Lankan politics is "inappropriate."

Political analyst Elliott Tepper of Carleton University agrees. "The politics are quickly intervening and the optics are quickly taking over the humanitarian purpose of the visit and that's a real pity."

The prime minister's schedule indicates there will not be a visit to the rebel-controlled areas. Instead Martin will meet in Colombo with government officials and the Tamil National Alliance - a legitimate political party that sympathizes with the rebels.
