A top Sri Lankan government relief official has said that the LTTE's loud and persistent gripe that no government relief material is reaching areas controlled by it is only a clever ploy to collect money for its own coffers from gullible Tamils living abroad.
"The LTTE is pretending that no aid is reaching its areas just to motivate Sri Lankan Tamils living abroad to pour money into its coffers," a top official told Hindustan Times on condition of anonymity.
The official said that he had checked with the UN agencies engaged in relief work in the rebel-held northern districts, and they categorically said that government aid was reaching.
But the distribution was being done only by the LTTE's own outfit, the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO).
The district authorities that get the relief material from government agencies, hand them over to the TRO.
"The refugees who get the relief do not know that the material was sent by the government. They think it is organised by the TRO or LTTE," the official said.
