<span style='font-size:25pt;line-height:100%'>Government says \"NO\" to ISGA, peace process in shambles? </span>
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, August 3, 2004, 12.16 p.m.. In what appeared to be a "definite setback" to the country's fragile peace process, the United Peoples Freedom Alliance Government today declared that they will not take up the LTTE's Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal for discussion when peace talks resume.
This is despite the LTTE insisting that they will not come to the negotiating table unless the Government agrees to base talks on the ISGA. The general secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maitripala Sirisena quoted the President as saying at the Alliance executive council meeting today that the peace talks would not be resumed based on LTTE's "ISGA" proposals. The Government's main ally, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna which is very much against the ISGA, may have pressurised President Kumaratunga into making such a drastic decision, sources told the Lanka Academic.
President would have been in fear that if she ignored the JVP, then she wouldn't have had a Government, because at several instances the JVP warned that if the ISGA is taken up for discussion, then they will pull out of the Government, the source added.
