<b>EU monitors accuse Tamil Tigers of rigging Sri Lanka vote by violence</b>
17 June 2004
European election monitors accused Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels Thursday of using violence to manipulate the results of April 2 parliamentary elections in favour of their proxies.
John Cushnahan, who led a panel of European monitors, said the primary source of violence in the run-up to the election came from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) whose proxies won 22 seats.
"<b>The LTTE-motivated violence denied the right of all parties to campaign freely in all parts of the country, especially the north and the east</b>," Cushnahan, an Irish member of the European parliament, told reporters here.
