Norwegian Peace Monitors Report Fruitful Sri Lanka Talks
02 Jun 2004, 19:46 UTC
Norwegian peace monitors in Sri Lanka say the government and Tamil Tiger rebels have held fruitful talks aimed at ending a string of killings that threaten the truce between the two sides.
Wednesday's talks, held in Batticaloa, come a day after the rebels warned of "a period of calamity and destruction," unless the violence ends.
The monitoring group says both sides have agreed to meet again on June 16th.
The Tamil Tiger rebels have blamed security forces and breakaway militants for the recent slayings of prominent Tamil figures. Sri Lanka's army has denied any involvement in the killings.
The rebels have been battling for a separate homeland for more than 20 years. The conflict has claimed more than 60,000 lives.
