Monday, May 31, 2004, 9:48 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
May 29, Colombo: Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim, who was here to lay the foundation for the resumption of the peace talks, has left the island empty-handed following unsuccessful discussions with the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.
Mr. Solheim arrived here following a request from President Chandrika Kumaratunga to play the role of facilitator and resume the stalled peace talks.
Last Wednesday the visiting Norwegian envoy held talks with the LTTE?s political leader S.P. Thamilchelvan. During the meeting, the LTTE demanded that the institutionalization of the Interim Self-Governing Authority (ISGA) in the Northeast Province should take place first and that the core issues could be discussed later.
Later in Colombo, Mr. Solheim informed President Kumaratunga of the LTTE?s stand. Following the meeting, the Presidential Secretariat said, ?The duo had an exchange of views on the agenda for the talks and it was agreed Norway would continue consultations.?
It is also learnt that the peace talks will resume within four months.
