A Tamil Journalist who openly opposed Colonel Karuna's Group shot and killed.
Batticaloa, 31 May: Nellai G.Nadesan, a Batticaloa based correspondent of Virakesari a leading Tamil daily newspaper based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and the IBC Radio run by the Liberation of Tigers of Tamil Eelam in London was shot and killed this morning in Batticaloa.
According to unconfirmed police reports, Iyathurai G. Nadesan (49) was shot and killed when he was going to a temple in the town of Batticaloa - which is located 222 kilometers (136 miles) east of Colombo.
The report further adds that gunmen might have ambushed near the said Hindu temple and fired the fatal shots at Nadesan.
Nadesan from Jaffna but continued to reside in Batticaloa, started as a leading member of Eelam People Revolutionary Liberation Front (RPRLF) and was in charge of the media in the former North-East Provincial Council for which A. Varatharaja Perumal was then the Chief Minister.
Earlier on 03 April 2000, a grenade was lobbed at the house of G. Nadesan located in the high security zone of Batticaloa town. The explosion said to had damaged the electricity connection to his house and parts of its verandah.
Nadesan left the EPRLF and became an ardent supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and was alleged that he wrote many reports openly name-calling former LTTE military Commander Colonel Karuna Amman as "Traitor of the Tamils," despite being warned by the breakaway faction of the LTTE (Karuna group) to desist from using inflammatory languages, while filing news items to the London based IBC radio.
According to reports, on numerous occasions Nadesan had been threatened and warned for his news reporting.
Nadesan is survived by his wife and three children.
