Breakaway Tamil rebel group vows to make comeback
By Sinha Ratnatunga
Colombo: A group backing deposed Tamil guerrilla regional leader from eastern Sri Lanka has vowed to make a comeback in a fresh warning to loyalists of the guerrilla leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, in the conflict between rival factions.
The new warning was issued by a group purported to be backing former Batticaloa-Ampara military leader Karuna who has now fled the area. Some of his cadres loyal to him remain.
The warning came in the form a leaflet distributed in the eastern town of Batticaloa by a group believed to be backing Karuna.
The group was not identified, but people in the area confirmed that Karuna's group has been developing in the area over the weeks.
They have been blamed for the assassination of Dean of the Commerce Faculty of the eastern University, Kumarveil Thambiah. He was gunned down at his residence in Batticaloa town on Monday.
The academic was identified as a supporter of the main LTTE group and had fled his home earlier when Karuna ordered people of northern origin to leave the place. But subsequently returned when Karuna escaped from the area last month.
The LTTE has asked the Scandinavian monitors to conduct a full inquiry into the matter.
In the leaflet they explained why Karuna had fled the area. It claimed that Karuna's group had only temporarily withdrawn and would be returning to take over power.
The leaflet said that many of the cadres who were sent in from north belonged to the eastern province and Karuna did not want a confrontation with his cadres from his own area which would have resulted in killing of persons of eastern origin.
The leaflet warns government servants, students and public to refrain from extending support to LTTE cadres from the north reffered to as 'inhuman traitors from the Wanni'.
It warns that such people would be treated as traitors and would be dealt with severely and vows to eliminate cadres from the north.
"Our injured persons were not allowed to be taken to hospital and they were bled to death. Some of the civilians also were treated in a similar manner," it said.
