Kottegoda to meet LTTE leaders
by Chamikara Weerasinghe
The newly appointed Overall Operational Commander for the Eastern Province, Major General Shantha Kottegoda will meet LTTE military-politico leaders on Wednesday to discuss killings by unknown gunmen in the East.
The spate of killings in the East has reportedly caused anxiety between the security forces and the LTTE.
Major General Kottegoda told the Daily News that the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in the Batticaloa district had arranged this meeting following his request.
The meeting's objective is to ensure the continuance of the Ceasefire Agreement, he said.
The meeting will be held with SLMM facilitation at the Vavunathivu Divisional Secretariat office in no-man's land in Batticaloa. According to the military, there were 15 incidents of killings in the East by unidentified gunmen during the last two months.
Eleven LTTE cadres, two Army personnel and two civilians were killed.
Denying the LTTE allegations as "unfounded and false ", he said it was no secret that there was war between the LTTE and its dissident Karuna's faction in uncontrolled areas of the East.
The meeting between the army team led by Major General Kottegoda and the LTTE military-politico leadership is expected to clear these matters before it could develop into an unnecessary confrontational level, he said. The Army's committed to ensure that the Ceasfire Agreement is not violated, on the advice of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, he added.
