Associated Press, Sun May 30, 2004 02:29 EDT . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Unidentified gunmen killed a Tamil businessman in Sri Lanka - 's northeast, an area increasingly dominated by violent incidents, police said Sunday. There has been unrest in Sri Lanka - 's east since the Tamil Tigers' main rebel group crushed a 6,000-strong factional revolt led by Muralitharan last month, killing more than 30 guerrillas and several civilians.
Since then, more than a dozen people have been killed in the region including a military intelligence operative and rebels. Both the security forces and the rebels have denied targeting each other in the attacks.
Muralitharan's whereabouts remain unknown, although there is speculation that his supporters are still active in the area.
European cease-fire monitors have warned that the slayings could threaten the fragile truce and the peace process aimed at ending a civil conflict that has killed nearly 65,000 people.
The rebels began their violent campaign in 1983 to create a separate state for minority Tamils.
