Suspected Tamil rebel kills Sri Lankan policeman
Associated Press, Wed May 19, 2004 05:45 EDT . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) A suspected Tamil Tiger rebel shot and killed a police officer in eastern Sri Lanka - on Wednesday, police said.
M.S. Dassanayake, of the Anti-Subversive Unit of the Batticaloa Police, was fatally shot as he was buying stamps at the local post office, said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
No claim of responsibility was made, but the police officer blamed the rebels for the attack.
The eastern town of Batticaloa, 220 kilometers (136 miles) east of the capital Colombo, is under government control, but the Tamil Tiger rebels operate in surrounding areas.
The Anti-Subversive Unit guards major government installations in the area against attacks by the rebels, who had waged a 19-year separatist war until a truce halted the fighting in February 2002.
