Secretary of State Powell was in Sri Lanka as a young Army Officer

By Bandula Jayasekara Washington DC - United States Secretary of State, General Collin Powell who will met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadragamar yesterday is no stranger to Sri Lanka. He visited the island in 1983, not as a General or a diplomat but as a young Lt. Colonel. Powell visited Sri Lanka along with US Secretary of Defence, Casper Weinberger in 1983 when. Weinberger called on President J.R.Jayawardane at the Presidents House in Colombo. Since then General Powell had not forgotten about the island of Sri Lanka and the large banyan tree at the Presidential garden. On several occasions the General had mentioned about the majestic banyan tree first to Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadiragamar when they met in 2001, May at the State Department. Subsequently the minister had gifted Powell with a photograph of the Banyan Tree. It also said that Secretary Powells deputy, Richard Armitage too had visited Sri Lanka with Weinberger.
Foreign Minister Kadiragamar who has an excellent rapport with the US Secretary of State described the US Secretary of State as a warm hearted and an understanding human being. They met at the State Department yesterday and had a warm and cordial discussion on US/Sri Lanka relations.
