Another General Election this year?
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, May 1, 2004, 4.26 p.m.. Sri Lankas main Opposition United National Party, has intimated a possibility of yet another General Election end of this year. According to reports, the party is expecting another Parliamentary Election, in another six months time. The main reason for yet another poll has been attributed to the newly elected United Peoples Freedom Alliance, which is a minority government, and seven seats short of a working majority in Parliament.
The Government also failed to secure the most important post of Speaker, which was won by Opposition Candidate and former Minister W.J.M. Lokubandara, on the 22nd of last month. The election for the Speaker post was held at the inaugural sessions of the 13th Parliament.
Meanwhile the United National Party, which secured 82 seats at the April 2, General Election, has discussed ways and means of revamping their party. The partys weaknesses were deeply analysed at a recent party meeting. The Alliance government secured only 106 seats in the 225-member legislature.
