Lanka considers offering refuge to Karuna
Colombo, April 12. (PTI): Sri Lanka today said it was willing to consider granting refuge to rebel Tamil Tiger leader, V Muralitharan, who abruptly ended a factional fight between the LTTE, Defence Secretary Cyril Herath, said.
The government was willing to consider requests for refuge for Muralitharan, better known as Karuna, who abruptly ended fighting, but is reportedly being pursued by the main guerrilla group, Herath said.
"If there is a request, we are willing to consider it on humanitarian grounds," he said adding "but we have not heard from him. He is very much on his own. But if there is a request for refuge, we will consider."
Herath denied that the military had sent a helicopter to the east of the island to rescue Karuna after he disbanded his fighters and called it 'quits' unable to face the major offensive by the LTTE.
