<b>Tamil Tigers declare truce in Sri Lanka

KAJUWATTE, Sri Lanka -- The main Tamil rebel group claimed control Sunday of an area where a renegade faction was based and declared a two-day truce to allow civilians to celebrate the Buddhist and Hindu New Year.

Tens of thousands of residents have fled the area. J. Ruben of the Dutch relief organization ZOA Refugee Care told The Associated Press the main rebel group had announced a cease-fire for Monday and Tuesday so civilians could return to their homes for the holiday. New Year's is celebrated on the same day by the country's majority Sinhalese population, which is Buddhist, and minority Tamil Hindus.</span>
