BBC Wrote:Gandhi assassination suspect caught in Sri Lanka
Colombo, Apr 4 (IANS) :
A Tamil Tiger guerrilla reportedly linked to former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination has been caught by a breakaway faction of the rebel group in Sri Lanka's east, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Sunday Leader identified the suspect by his pseudonym Neelan and said he was a key member of the intelligence wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which was outlawed in India following the 1991 assassination of Gandhi.
The paper said the breakaway faction led by former LTTE regional commander V. Muraleedharan alias Colonel Karuna caught Neelan during a sweep for LTTE operatives in the eastern district of Batticaloa following a wave of killings blamed on the mainstream Tamil Tigers led by Velupillai Prabhakaran.
\"This man (Neelan) is suspected of being involved in the Rajiv Gandhi killing and is a close associate of (LTTE intelligence chief) Pottu Amman,\" the Sunday Leader said in a full-page story.
\"This is apparently a prize catch for Karuna and a useful chip to bargain with in the future,\" it said, without clarifying with who the renegade commander, who split ranks with Prabhakaran last month, would bargain over Neelan.
Both Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman are wanted in India for the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. Gandhi was killed by a woman LTTE suicide bomber at an election rally near Chennai while on a comeback trail in the 1991 elections.
