CWC to defect from UNP?
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, March 4, 2004, 11.59 pm. The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) is expected to extend their support to the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA). CWC Leader Arumugam Thondaman is reported to have met with UPFA Leader President Chandrika Kumaratunga today evening, soon after the final election results were announced.
The CWC is reported to have put forward several demands to the UPFA, if they are to support the Alliance. Most of the demands centre around the rights of the estate sector Tamil population. The CWC has secured seven seats at this election. "The UPFA wants to gather all the support they can get, so that they will have a comfortable majority in parliament," sources said.
The CWC soon after Parliament was dissolved in early February, pledged their continuous support to the United National Party.
