The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) has made a request from the Peace Secretariat in Colombo to move 140 LTTE cadres from the North to the East, immediately. The request was made from the Peace Secretariat yesterday. (31st). However, the Peace Secretariat had informed the SLMM that according to the ceasefire agreement signed between the government and the LTTE, LTTE has to give them two weeks notice to process the request.
After the split between LTTE's eastern commander Karuna Amman and its leader Vellupillai Prabhakran several northern cadres have being sent to the east by the LTTE leadership. A senior official of the peace secretariat told The Lanka Academic that LTTE (Karuna) has accused the peace secretariat of aiding and abetting Prabhakaran, saying that the Secretariat had allowed northern cadres to move to the east. He said that the Secretariat have no other option, but to act according to the ceasefire agreement. However, Varathan , spokesman for Karuna Amman said, " The ceasefire agreement clearly states that cadres could be moved, but, it does not say that it could be done in preparation for war. What we see now is a clear military build up by the northern cadres in the Verugal area in the east
