LTTE briefs British High Commissioner on Eastern crisis
Colombo, Mar 9 (UNI) The Wanni leadership of the Tamil Tiger rebels today briefed the visiting British High Commissioner Steven Evans on the current Eastern crisis caused by the breaking away of Colonel Karuna from the outfit.
A LTTE website said that its political wing head S P Thamilselvan has met the visiting British High Commissioner at the Kilinochchi peace secretariat this morning and discussed several issues, including the resumption of peace talks, humanitarian assistance in the North-East and forthcoming general election.
''The High Commissioner was briefed by Mr Thamilselvan on the political situation in Batticaloa-Amparai,'' the website said.
The LTTE's political wing head during the discussions assured Mr Evans that the LTTE was committed to facilitate a free and fair election but expressed concerns about the practical difficulties that the voters will face in logistics and positioning of the polling booths.
He has offered several viable options to the High Commissioner for the consideration of the international poll observers that ''would facilitate unimpeded access to polling booths''.
According to the website, while pointing out the complexity of the election related problems, ''Mr Evans has reiterated the necessity to ensure a fair and free election enabling the voters full freedom of mobility to exercise their franchise''.
Mr Evans has, however, promised to take up this matter with the authorities and EU monitors.
The British High Commissioner is, incidentally, the first foreign head of mission to meet the LTTE leadership after the split within the organisation.
