AP News under fire as the rebels deny the split
The Associated Press (AP) in its latest update from Sri Lanka said, "A general commanding thousands of rebels in Sri Lanka - has split from the main Tamil Tiger army because of disputes over the deployment of fighters, a senior rebel said Wednesday".
The Sinhala author of the story cited a senior rebel from the east as the source for the story. When TNS contacted the sources close to the Tamil Tiger eastern leadership about the story, they vehemently denied any split in the Tiger ranks and also disputed the claim that the AP writer talked to a senior rebel.
The India daily "Hindu" too reported early in the day that a split in the LTTE Ranks but quickly retracted its story and said there is no differences within the LTTE, quoting a Tamil Tiger eastern official.
Media circles in the capital Colombo wonder where this story originated from, why now and what the motive behind it is? Reports of a Tiger split has been around for the last 20 years of civil conflict, and is not something new in the Island nation, says political observers. Each time it has turned out to be another story than a real split, they further say.
