1. In Sri Lanka, the army bombs the positions of the Tigers after a murder attempt against his leader
http://www.lemonde.fr/web/article/0,1-0@2-...1-760396,0.html

In an unsurpassed climbing since the establishment of a cease-fire in Februar,y 2002, the Sri Lankan air force and navy continued, on Wednesday, April 26th, bombing the positions of the Tigers of release of Eelam tamoul (LTTE), in reply to a murder attempt - suicide which seriously hurt the leader of the army, the general Sarath Fonseka.
The government accused the Tigers of having financed the murder attempt, made on Tuesday by a woman which made blow up in front of the escort of the general, inside the HQ of the Sri Lankan army, right in the center of Colombo, the capital of the country.

To penetrate in cette into zone put under haute security, the young woman, which claimed itself surrounding wall, would have used an hour of visits to the sick in the military hospital located in the headquarters of the army. Eight persons, whom four bodyguards of the general, were killed, while the leader of the army was hospitalized in a serious state. The murder attempt was not demanded, but LTTE has a long habit of attack of personalities by commandoes - suicides.
From Tuesday evening, the air force and navy bombed positions of the Tigers in the region very flustered by Trincomalee (east of the island), while the government called the Sri Lankan to "deduction".

In an address televised in the nation, the president Mahinda Rajapakse nevertheless proved to be ready to take up challenge. " No act of terrorism can scare me. Similarly, my government cannot be put in knees by provocations ", he asserted. During a maintenance with the chief editors of the Sri Lankan newspapers, on Monday, the president had declared " caused to resolve problem by debate. We are ready to make all our possible to bring LTTE to the table of negotiations ", he had pointed out.
The Tigers had cancelled their participation, some days earlier, in the talks of peace which should have been held on Monday and Tuesday in Geneva, using as an excuse the impossibility of holding a meeting with their commanders on the ground, in the east of the country.

Four years after the official stopping of hostilities between the army and LTTE, cease-fire has never seemed so fragile and the Scandinavian Observer mission (SLMM) thought, in a press release, that the murder attempt of Colombo could " compromise any possibility of talks in future ".

For three weeks, the situation on the ground does not cease deteriorating and Norway, mediatory in the process of peace, did not succeed in restoring contact between parties. More serious, the Norwegian mediator was avoided by both camps, what gives to understand that the hour is not any more in negotiation really.
It appears more and more apparently that LTTE will not return to the table of talks before the government puts an end to the activities of faction dissident of the Tigers taken by the colonel Karuna. By parting from LTTE, this military leader of regions is takes a new look at both cardinal principles of the organization: LTTE is the only representative of the Tamouls; the north and is from the island it with tamoule majority constitute the single entity.

During the meeting of Geneva, in February, the first one between the government and the Tigers since 2003, the bet at a walking pace of faction Karuna was the only preoccupation of LTTE. Are the Tigers ready for war to try themselves to resolve problem? The challenge for the government is, anyway, to control its troops to prevent any unjustified retaliation on the tamoule population in general.

By bombing the positions of LTTE, the government wanted to show its firmness in relation to the Sinhalese extremists who claim actions against the Tigers and in relation to LTTE, already accused in August, 2005 of the assassination of minister of Foreign Affairs Lakshman Kadirgamar. To check climbing will not be easy as much as any point agreed does not appear to exist today.

2.A "fatherland" tamoule, objective of LTTE

Aimed in an authoritarian way by Velupillai Prabhakaran, LTTE (Tigers of release of Eelam tamoul), which eliminated all his tamouls rivals by weapon, fights since 1983 for the creation of a "fatherland" for the tamoule minority of Sri Lanka. Installed especially in the north and this one is from the island her, represent 18 % of the 20 millions of Sri Lankan, in the majority Sinhalese. Tamouls is Hindu or christian, while the majority of the Sinhalese are buddhist. Sri Lanka also counts a Muslim minority about 8 % of the population, installed predominantly in the east of the country and which does not want to be subjected to the law of LTTE in any regulations of conflict. LTTE occupies a band of territory in the north of the island at the moment, where it exercises an absolute control of the population.
LTTE justifies its battle by accusing the government with Sinhalese majority of discrimination towards tamoule minority. Since Februar,y 2002, a precarious peace reigned in Sri Lanka, but no thorough negotiation on the regulations of conflict has taken place since 2003
