Dec 29, Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is on an official tour in India, today expressed his desire to hold next year's Rajiv Gandhi commemoration ceremony in Sri Lanka and to invite Indian Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi as the Chief Guest.
Issuing a statement, the President's Office in Colombo said, "Visiting President Rajapaksa held discussions with the Indian Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi after addressing the Indian business summit this morning."
Joined by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, the two leaders discussed in detail the need to strengthen political, social and economic relations between Sri Lanka and India.
The Sri Lankan delegation led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to hold discussions with a number of Indian Ministers this afternoon. The President intends to meet Ministers representing various fields and to hold discussions on areas in which India and Sri Lanka can function in collaboration, the President's Office said.
