Thugs attack aid buses

21 December 2005
BUSES damaged by vandals at Ballymena bus station last week were destined for Sri Lanka as part of the Tsunami Appeal.

Over 60 windows were smashed on seven buses, causing around £40,000 of damage last Friday.

It has now emerged four of the buses were bound for south east Asia as part of the relief effort.

Sam Todd, the depot's district manager, said: "Translink are sending a lot of old buses out to the region and the damaged ones were waiting to be sent out and obviously they will have to be fixed now before they can go."

Sinn Fein MLA for North Antrim Philip McGuigan said: "Not only does Translink provide a service that everyone in the community here can avail of and which is a necessity for many people, but the company also sends buses to Asia to help those whose lives were devastated by the Tsunami. The fact it was these buses that were attacked is terrible."
