Fraser sorry for grabbing Tripodi
NSW Nationals frontbencher Andrew Fraser has apologised for grabbing Roads Minister Joe Tripodi around the neck during an altercation in parliament overnight.
The incident occurred during a speech Mr Tripodi was giving in the lower house about the Pacific Highway upgrade.
During the speech, Mr Tripodi said Mr Fraser was not in his Coffs Harbour electorate the last time the roads minister visited.
Witnesses said Mr Fraser threatened to throw a glass of water on Mr Tripodi before crossing the chamber and lunging at the minister.
Mr Fraser apologised in parliament a short time later, saying, "I was gravely out of line in my actions towards the minister tonight".
"I wish to unreservedly apologise to the Minister for Roads and Members of this House for my actions this evening," Mr Fraser said.
Mr Tripodi said he was stunned by the "unprecedented" attack.
"I was in the middle of parliamentary debate, talking about the Pacific Highway, and Andrew Fraser ... lost control of himself and filled a glass full of water," Mr Tripodi said.
"I thought he was going to throw it at me.
"Then he ran around the table ... and went straight for me.
"I took a few steps back, hoping to defuse the situation, but when I turned around, he'd grabbed me around the chest or the neck, I can't remember which, and started shaking me violently while he was screaming at me."
