Sri Lankan minister is shot dead
Kadirgamar was from the minority Tamil community
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has been shot dead in the capital, Colombo.
Mr Kadirgamar, 73, underwent emergency surgery at the National Hospital after the shooting, but doctors were unable to save him.
Police said the minister was shot near his heavily-guarded home by an unidentified attacker.
A ceasefire between the government and Tamil Tiger separatists has been in place on the island since 2002.
Mr Kadirgamar, who was from the South Asian island's minority Tamil community, was a close aide of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
