An Air France passenger jet with up to 252 people on board has skidded off a runway and crashed in flames in a shallow ravine at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
The Air France A340 overshot the end of the runaway and crashed into trees and bushes in a dip that separates the runaway from a busy highway.
Canadian television showed pictures of flames and smoke from the fuselage of the jet.
The incident occurred when there were heavy thunder storms across the region. The airport had suspended departures and arrivals for a while because of the storm.
The aircraft was Air France flight 358 from Paris to Toronto.
Police say Air France flight 358 inbound from Paris caught fire after skidding off a runway at Toronto's Pearson airport.
The plane crashed into a ravine after apparently running off the end of the runway.
Police say the plane is an Air France passenger jet that was attempting to land when it ran into trouble.
Rescue vehicles rushed to the scene. It's in a wooded area near Highway 401, Canada's busiest highway.
We're also hearing that it was an Airbus 340 plane, which holds just over 200 passengers.</span>
