Karuna faction in prison protest

Four Tamil prisoners started a rooftop fast at the Moneragala jail on Sunday.

The Moneragala acting chief jailer H M Premadasa told BBC Sandeshaya that the prisoners were members of the Karuna faction.

Their demand is that they be released or brought into court.

It has been at least two months since these prisoners have been imprisoned, said the jailer.

Arrested by the police for possession of dangerous weapons, the Karuna faction prisoners were transferred to the Moneragala prison from Batticaloa deeming it unsafe for prisoners from both the LTTE and the Karuna faction to be kept in the same prison.

Acting Chief Jailer Premadasa who said that Karuna faction prisoners were not taken to courts in Batticaloa and Valaichchenai due to risk of been attacked by the LTTE.

He added that police have been called in for extra security in the Moneragala prison.
