Kousalyan killed in ambush

Mr. E. Kousalyan, head of the Liberation Tigers' political division for Batticaloa-Amparai district was killed in an ambush on the highway to Batticaloa Monday night around 7.45, Sri Lanka military sources said. Three persons who were travelling with him were killed and four were injured including two policemen in the attack which took place between Sri Lanka army garrisons at Welikanda and Punanai, northwest of Battialoa, according the SLA. Mr. Kousalyan was travelling with Mr. Ariyanayagam Chandra Nehru, former TNA MP for Amparai district, who is seriously injured.
The military identified two of the dead as Mathimaran and Kumanan, both members of the LTTE. The injured policemen were providing escort to Mr. Chandra Nehru's vehicle.

Liberation Tigers blamed paramilitary operatives working with the Sri Lankan armed forces for the attack.

Mr. Kousalyan is the most senior LTTE official to be killed after Colombo and Tigers signed a cease fire in February 2002.

He was returning from Vanni after discussing the expansion plans for Tsunami rehabiltation in the east, LTTE sources said.

Meanwhile, LTTE officials in Kilinochchi scotched rumours that Mr. S. Thamilenthi, Head of LTTE's FInancial Division, was among the killed in the ambush. "Mr. Thamilenthi is in Kilinochchi", one of them said.

LTTE officials added that Mr. Kousalyan was accompanied by Vinothan, Puhalan, Senthamil and Nithimaran in his journey Monday from Kilinochchi to Batticaloa.

COLOMBO - A top Tamil Tiger leader was killed together with four other rebels in eastern Sri Lanka Monday in what appeared to be an internecine clash, government military sources said.


The top political wing leader of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the eastern region was ambushed as his convoy was travelling to the coastal district of Batticaloa, a military official in the region said.

The identity of the guerrilla leader was not immediately disclosed.

Four others, including two policemen escorting the Tiger leader were seriously wounded in the ensuing gunbattle, the official said from Batticaloa, 303 kilometres (187 miles) east of here by road.

Government military officials said they suspected the attack was carried out by a breakaway faction of the Tamil Tigers led by former number two in the LTTE, V. Muralitharan, better known as Karuna.

A gunbattle had lasted about 10 minutes, a military source said. The attack was in the Poonani area. It looks like the attackers had followed the vehicle and then opened fire at Poonani.

A former Tamil legislator, Chandra Nehru, was among those who escaped with critical injuries, the sources said.

There was no immediate reaction from the LTTE to the latest attack against their political wing cadres.

Three days ago, another LTTE political wing leader was shot dead and another wounded and the military suspected that it was the work of Karuna"s faction which led an unprecedented rebellion in March 2004.

The main LTTE has since tried to regain its hold on the multi-ethnic eastern region and accused the government of supporting Karuna"s faction, a claim denied by the security forces.

முன்னாள் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் சந்திரநேரு அரியநாயக்தின் நிலை கவலைக்கிடமாக இருப்பதாக வைத்தியசாலை தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

இவர்கள் நாமல்கம என்னும் கிராமத்திலுள்ள பிள்ளையார்கோவிலுக்கு காணிக்கை செலுத்தி விட்டு வாகனத்தில் ஏறிய சமயம் இனந் தெரியாத நபர்கள் பதுங்கியிருந்து துப்பாக்கிப் பிரயோகம் செய்ததாகக் கூறப்படுகின்றது.

<b>Senior Tiger killed in Sri Lanka </b>

A top Tamil Tiger and four other rebels have been shot dead in government-held territory in eastern Sri Lanka.
It is unclear who carried out the attack, which took place about 40km (25 miles) north-east of Batticaloa.

Rebel political leader E Kaushalyan is the most senior Tiger killed since a ceasefire began in February 2002.

The authorities suspect supporters of a renegade Tiger commander, but a pro-rebel website blames paramilitary forces working with the army.

BBC correspondents say the latest violence will deal a further serious blow to efforts to restart peace talks which stalled in 2003.

The peace process has suffered setbacks in recent weeks as the Sri Lankan government and rebels have traded accusations about the allocation of aid to survivors of the Asian tsunami.

Four injured

Mr Kaushalyan was travelling from the rebel-held town of Omanthai to Batticaloa when his vehicle came under attack about five or six kilometres from the nearest army checkpoint.

Two policemen escorting the Tiger leader were injured, as was a local politician and one other person.

Police are investigating the shooting incident and have not said who carried it out.

But army spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayaka told the BBC that the authorities suspected supporters of renegade Tiger commander Colonel Karuna, who split from the rebels in March 2004.

Since then, there has been an upsurge of violence in which government and rebel supporters have died in the east, although the month since the tsunami saw a brief lull.

More than 60,000 people have died in violence in Sri Lanka since the rebels began their fight for a homeland for minority Tamils in the island's north and east.

Mr. Ariyanayagam Chandra Nehru, ex-Tamil National Alliance MP for Amparai district, succumbed to his wounds Tuesday morning in Colombo. He was seriously injured when gunmen suspected to be working with the Sri Lanka army shot dead senior Liberation Tigers official, Mr. E. Kousalyan and three members of the LTTE who were traveling with Mr. Nehru in his van to Batticaloa Monday night. Mr. Nehru was elected to Parliament at the general elections in December 2001. He worked as a captain on international merchant ships for many years before retiring to Thirukkovil, his ancestral village, 76 kilometres south of Batticaloa. Mr. Nehru is the eldest son of one of the most senior leaders of the Tamil rights movement on the east coast, Mr. Arappor Ariyanayagam.

Although he lost his seat by a narrow margin to another TNA candidate at the general election in April 2004, he continued to work as a rights activist in the remote Tamil villages on Sri Lanka's southeast coast.

The Liberation Tigers appointed him as a member of the human rights body.

Meanwhile, LTTE officials from Batticaloa are at the Polannaruwa base hospital to take over the bodies of Mr. Kousalyan and three of their colleagues who were killed near Welikanda near the Polannaruwa Batticaloa district border.
