<span style='color:red'>Sri Lankan Breakaway Rebels Disperse, Leader On The Run
COLOMBO (AP)--A renegade Tamil Tiger rebel leader was on the run Tuesday with his forces dispersing, following days of factional fighting with fellow Tamil militants that killed dozens and threatened Sri Lanka's fragile cease-fire.
Military sources said that about 500 members of the breakaway group fled their positions overnight, hours after about 2,000 of their comrades gave up their posts in eastern Sri Lanka, where the renegade rebels have clashed with the mainstream Tamil Tigers since Friday.
The mainstream Tigers were in "full control of the eastern districts" following their advance against the breakaway Eastern Tigers, said spokesman Agnes Bragadottir of the European cease-fire monitoring team.
Sri Lanka's military chief, meanwhile, said that if asked, he was ready to give protection to Eastern Tigers' leader, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan.
"We don't know where he is, but if he asks for protection, we can give him so," Gen. Lionel Balagalle, who heads Sri Lanka's 100,000-strong armed forces, told The Associated Press.
The government in the past has given protection to Tiger deserters. "This has been our policy and we will stick to it," he said.
Military sources in Colombo said they believe Muralitharan - known as Karuna - had fled from his main base in Thoppigala. The area is about 120 kilometers north of Colombo.
Muralitharan split with the mainstream Tigers early last month in a dispute over regional rivalry and political strategy, taking 6,000 of the group's 15,000 fighters and claiming control over a portion of eastern Sri Lanka.
Northern-based rebels on Friday launched an offensive that pushed the Eastern Tigers from their front line along the Verugal River, north of Thoppigala, in heavy fighting that eased by Sunday.
The fighting between Tamil militants - not far from territory controlled by the Sinhalese-dominated government - has risked drawing in the Sri Lankan army and reviving the tropical island's civil war.
Separatist Tamils started fighting the government in 1983 in a war that was halted by a February 2002 cease-fire accord, after having claimed nearly 65,000 lives.
Military officials reached in eastern Sri Lanka early Tuesday said that about 500 more of Muralitharan's cadres dispersed overnight and left the area for their homes. It wasn't immediately known if they left under the direction of Muralitharan or simply abandoned their posts, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
On Monday, the renegade faction abandoned its massive Meenaham military base, home to thousands of fighters and weaponry, rebel and military sources said.
"According to information we have received, Karuna seems to have given up," Eric Solheim, a key broker for the Norwegian-backed peace process, told The Associated Press. "We are still uncertain about Karuna's destiny."
Military officials have said the unconfirmed death toll from the heavy fighting starting Friday was 33, including civilians. </span>

ஐ.ம.சு.மு. என்ற கூட்டமைப்பு உடைந்து போகாது ஆட்சியிலிருப்பதற்காக, நாம் வெறும் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்களாக பாராளுமன்றத்தில் இருந்து, ஏப்ரல் 22ல் அமைச்சரவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட எமது ஒத்துழைப்பை வழங்கினாலும், ஆட்சியைத் தொடர்வதற்கு எமது கோரிக்கைகள் மீள்பரிசீலனை செய்யப்பட்டு முழுமையாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப் படுவது அவசியம் என்று ஜே.வி.பி. அறிவித்துள்ளது.
அவர்கள் மேலும் தெரிவிக்கையில்,
சுதந்திரக்கட்சிக்கும் ஜே.வி.பி.க்கும் இறுதியாக எட்டப்பட்ட ஒப்பந்தத்தின் படி, ஒரு விசேட குழு இந்தக் கூட்டணியை மேற்பார்வை செய்து, ஒருங்கமைக்கும் பணியைச் செய்யவுள்ளதாகக் கூறப்பட்ட போதும், இதுவரை இப்படியொரு விசேட குழுவை, கூட்டணியின் தலைவி என்ற முறையில் ஐனாதிபதி சந்திரிகா ஒழுங்குசெய்யத் தவறியுள்ளார்.
அதைவிட, தரப்பட்ட ஆகக்குறைந்த நான்கு அமைச்சுக்களிலிருந்தும், முக்கிய அங்கங்களை நீக்கி, வேறு அமைச்சுக்களின் கீழ் கொண்டு வந்ததன் மூலம், எமக்கிடையிலான புரிந்துணர்வையும் நம்பிக்கையையும் ஐனாதிபதி மழுங்கடித்துள்ளார்.
பிரதமர் பதவி உட்பட, பல அமைச்சர்களின் நியமனம், எமக்குத் திருப்தி தருவதாகவோ உடன்பாடாகவோ இல்லை. சில அமைச்சுக்களின் அதிகாரங்கள், பணிகளை மீளமைப்பு செய்துள்ள ஐனாதிபதி, கூட்டணிக் கட்சியான எம்முடன் கலந்தாலோசிக்கவோ தகவல் பரிமாற்றம் செய்யவோ இல்லை.
இந்நிலையில், ஐ.ம.சு.முன்னணித் தலைமையின் அடுத்த கட்ட நடவடிக்கைகளை தாம் உன்னிப்பாக அவதானித்து வருவதாக ஜே.வி.பி. தெரிவித்துள்ளது.
ஜே.வி.பி.யின் நடவடிக்கைகளால் நிலைகுலைந்து போயுள்ள கூட்டணியின் நிலைப்பாட்டை சீர்செய்யும் நோக்குடன், கூட்டணியில் அங்கம் வகிக்கும் கட்சிகள் அனைத்தின் தலைமையையும், கூட்டணியின் முக்கிய தலைவர்களையும் ஓர் அவசர உச்சிமாநாட்டிற்கு வருமாறு அழைப்பு விடுத்துள்ளார் சந்திரிகா. </span>

Main faction rebels after taking control of a town near Batticaloa
The main faction of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels is now reportedly in full control of eastern areas after defeating a breakaway group.
The renegade leader, Colonel Karuna, is said to have fled the area and his forces have dispersed.
Hagrup Haukland, a spokesman for the international ceasefire monitors, said talks with rebels were "back on track".
Col Karuna broke away last month and fighting between the two factions erupted on Friday.
On Tuesday, the main faction freed more than 100 child soldiers who had been with the breakaway faction - the biggest single release of underage combatants in Sri Lanka's long conflict.

கருணா நேற்றைய தினம் தனது மீனக முகாமை விட்டுத் தப்பியோடிய போது அவர் எங்கு சென்றார் என்ற விடயம் குறித்த சந்தேகங்கள் எழுந்தன.
எனினும் மட்டக்களப்பு அம்பாறை மாவட்டம் முழுக் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டதையடுத்து, குடும்பிமலை, தொப்பிகல சார்ந்த காட்டுப்பகுதியை இன்று சல்லடைபோட்டுத் தேடிய விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் அவர்கள் அக் காட்டுப்பகுதிக்குள் இருப்பதற்கான தடயங்கள் எதுவுமே இல்லை எனத் தெரிவித்தனர்.
கருணா இவ்வளவு விரைவாகத் தான் தப்பியோட வேண்டிய நிலை ஏற்படும் என்பதைக் கனவிலும் நினைக்கவில்லை என்றும் போராளிகள் மத்தியில் எழுந்த எதிர்ப்பலையும், போராளிகளின் அணிகள் தலைமைப்பீடத்துடன் துரிதமாக ஏற்படுத்திய தொடர்புகளுமே அவரை சடுதியாகத் தப்பியோட வேண்டிய நிலைக்குத் தள்ளியதாகவும் அங்கிருந்து கிடைக்கும் செய்திகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.
குறிப்பாக மீனகம் முகாமில் இருந்த பொருட்கள் அரையும் குறையுமாக வாகனங்களில் ஏற்பட்ட நிலையிலேயே முகாமைக் கைவிட்டுத் தப்பியுள்ளனர். அத்தோடு செல்லும் போது அங்கிருந்த வாகனங்களில் பலவற்றைத் எரித்துமுள்ளனர்.
இதேவேளை மட்டக்களப்பு-அம்பாறை மாவட்டப் படையணிகளிற்கான ஆயுதங்களில் ஒரு கனரக மோட்டாரையும், சில துப்பாக்கிகளையும் தவிர ஏனைய ஆயுதங்களனைத்தும் மீட்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
இதேவேளை, கருணாவும் அவரது நெருங்கிய ஆதரவாளர்களும் இரு வாகனங்களில் தப்பிச் சென்றதைத் தாம் கண்டதாக பொதுமக்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். மேற்படி வாகனங்கள் நாலாம் முற்சந்தியை நோக்கிச் சென்றதாக பெண்டுகல்சேனை வாசிகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.
கருணாவின் அணிக்கான அரசியற்பொறுப்பாளராக நியமிக்கப்பட்ட விசு, தலைமைப்பீட அணியுடன் தொடர்புகளை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளதாகவும் அவர் நாளை அல்லது நாளை மறுதினம் வந்து இணையலாம் எனவும் எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

12.04.2004 அன்று துரோகி கருணாவால் லெப்.கேணல் நீலன் (சின்னத்தம்பி) சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளார் எனவும் 01.03.2004 அன்றிலிருந்து கருணாவால் தடுத்துவைக்கப்ட்டிருந்த லெப்.கேணல் நீலன் அவர்களை துரோகி கருணா தப்பி ஓடும்வேளை கருணாவின் மருதம் முகாமிற்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டு அங்கு வைத்து சுடப்பட்டுள்ளார் எனவும் இது தொடர்பாக வெளியிடப்பட்ட செய்திக் குறிப்பில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

12.04.04 அன்று காலை துரோகி கருணா தப்பி ஓடுவதற்கு முன்பாக தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த நீலன் அவர்களை தான் தங்கியிருந்த மருதம் முகாமிற்கு கொண்டு வரும்படி கூறியுள்ளார். அங்கு அவரைச் சுட்டு விட்டே துரோகி தப்பியோடியுள்ளான்.
அதன் பின்னர் 13.04.04 அன்று மருதம் முகாமில் தேடுதலை மேற்கொண்ட போது நீலன் அவர்களின் வித்துடல் கண்கள் துணியினால் கட்டப்பட்ட நிலையிலும் கைகள் விலங்கிடப்பட்ட நிலையிலும் கண்டு எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

தொடர்ந்து காலை 10.00 மணியளவில் 18 அகவைக்கு உட்பட்ட 113 பெண் போராளிகளும் 55 ஆண் போராளிகளும் மட்டு-அம்பாறை UNICEF பிரதிநிதியூடாக அவர்களது வீடுகளுக்கு அனுப்பிவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். 18 அகவைக்குக் குறைந்த 168 போராளிகளை அவர்களது பெற்றோர்கள் அழைத்துச் செல்வதற்கான ஒழுங்குகளை UNICEF மேற்கொண்டது.
இந்நிகழ்வில் மட்டு-அம்பாறைத் தளபதி ராம், மட்டு-அம்பாறை அரசியல்துறைப் பொறுப்பாளர் கௌசல்யன், அரசசார்பற்ற நிறுவனங்களின் இணைப்பாளர் தியாகராஜா மற்றும் சமாதான செயலகத்தின் பிரதி இயக்குநர் பவானந்தன் ஆகியோர் கலந்துகொண்டனர். இதற்கு முன்னரும் பல நூற்றுக்கணக்கான போராளிகள் அவர்களது வீடுகளுக்கு அனுப்பிவைக்கப்பட்டனர் என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. </span>

கருணாவும் அவரது நெருங்கிய சகாக்களும் தப்பியோடி, காட்டிற்குள் ஒழிந்திருப்பதாகவும், கொழும்பில் இருப்பதாகவும், வெளிநாடு சென்றுவிட்டதாகவும் பலவிதமான தகவல்கள் வெளியாகியுள்ள நிலையில், சிறீலங்கா இராணுவத்தினர், கருணா குழுவினரைக் காப்பாற்றி சிறீலங்காவிற்குள் ஒரு இரகசிய இடத்தில் ஒழித்து வைத்திருப்பதாக தங்களுக்கு நம்பகமாகத் தெரியவந்துள்ளதாகவே இப்பத்திரிகையின் கொழும்பு நிருபர் பி.கே.பாலச்சந்திரன் சுட்டிக்காட்டியுள்ளார்.
கருணா தனது கட்டுப்பாட்டிற்குள் கீழ் மட்டக்களப்பின் சில பகுதிகளை வைத்திருந்தபோது, போராளிகள் எவரையும் எந்தப் பத்திரிகையையோ வானொலியையோ பார்க்க கேட்க அனுமதிக்கவில்லை என்றும், ஒரு திறந்த சிறைச்சாலையில் வைத்திருப்பது போன்றே போராளிகளை வைத்திருந்தமை தெரியவந்துள்ளதாகவும் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.
கருணாவின் முகாமில் அவருக்குக் கீழே கட்டாயத்தின் பேரிலேயே போராளிகள் செயற்பட்டார்கள் என்பது உறுதியாகத் தெரிகிறது என்று குறிப்பிடும் இந்த நிருபர், அதற்கு ஆதாரமாக, இந்தப் போராளிகள் யாரும் தலைவர் பிரபாகரனின் படத்தைப் பார்க்கவோ வைத்திருக்கவோ கூடாது என்று கடுமையான தடை உத்தரவு போடப்பட்டிருந்த போதிலும், போராளிகள் இரகசியமாக தலைவரின் சிறிய படங்களை வைத்திருந்ததுடன், தினமும் காலையில், தலைவர் படத்தின் மீது வழமையாகச் செய்வது போன்று சத்தியப் பிரமாணம் எடுத்த பின்னரே தங்களது தினசரிக் காரியங்களில் ஈடுபட்டிருப்பதை விடுவிக்கப்பட்ட பல போராளிகள் தெரிவித்திருப்பதாகக் கூறியுள்ளார்.
தலைவர் பிரபாகரனைப் பற்றி தினமும் கருணா அவதூறான பல செய்திகளையும் தகவல்களையும் தெரிவித்து வந்த போதிலும், போராளிகள் எவரும் அதை நம்பவில்லை என்பதையும் விடுவிக்கப்பட்ட போராளிகள் உறுதிசெய்ததாக அவர் மேலும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
1980ம் ஆண்டிலிருந்து யாருக்கெதிராக கொடிய யுத்தத்தில் தன்னை ஈடுபடுத்திக் கொண்டாரோ, இறுதியாக அதே எதிரிகளிடம் மண்டியிட்டு சரணடைந்து பாதுகாப்புத் தேடியுள்ள கருணா, ஈழத்திமிழினத்திற்கு அவமானம் தேடித் தந்துள்ளார் என்று குறிப்பிடும் இப்பத்திரிகை, கருணாவின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் கிழக்கிலங்கையின் சில பகுதிகள் இருந்துள்ள 38 நாட்களும் ஈழத் தமிழரின் வீரவரலாற்றில் கறை படிந்த காலப்பகுதி என்றும் சுட்டிக்காட்டியுள்ளது. </span>

கருணாவின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருந்த கிழக்கு இலங்கைப் பகுதிகளில் இருந்து வெளியேறிய நார்வே அமைதிக் குழுவினர், இப்போது மீண்டும் அப் பகுதிகளில் தங்களது கண்காணிப்பை ஆரம்பித்துள்ளனர்.
புலிகள் இயக்கத்தில் இருந்து பிரிந்து தனித்து இயங்கப் போவதாக கருணா அறிவித்ததையடுத்து அந்தப் பகுதியில் இருந்த அமைதிக் குழுவினர் வெளியேறினர்.
இப்போது மட்டக்களப்பும் அப்பாறை மாவட்டமும் புலிகள் வசம் மீண்டும் வந்துவிட்டதையடுத்து நார்வே அமைதிக் கண்காணிப்புக் குழு மீண்டும் அப் பகுதிகளில் தனது செயல்பாட்டை ஆரம்பித்துள்ளது.
இந்தக் குழுவின் துணைத் தலைவரான ஹக்ருப் ஹாக்லேன்ட் இன்று இதனைத் தெரிவித்தார். இப் பகுதியில் மெதுவாக சகஜ நிலைமை திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருப்பதாகவும் அவர் கூறினார்.
இலங்கை ராணுவத்துடனான புலிகளின் போர் நிறுத்த உடன்படிக்கையின் விதிகளை இந்தக் குழு அமலாக்கி வருகிறது. ஆனால், இப் பகுதியை தனது கட்டுப்பாட்டில் எடுத்துக் கொண்ட கருணா அமைதிக் குழுவினரின் செயல்பாட்டைத் தடுத்தார்.
தன்னுடன் இலங்கை ராணுவம் தனி உடன்பாடு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றார். கருணாவுடன் எந்தவிதமான தொடர்பும் வைத்துக் கொள்ள விரும்பாத நார்வே குழுவினர் அப் பகுதியில் இருந்து வெளியேறினர்.
இந் நிலையில் புலிகளின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இப் பகுதி வந்துவிட்டதால் நார்வே குழுவினர் மீண்டும் இங்கு வந்திறங்கியுள்ளனர். மட்டக்களப்பில் புலிகள் அமைத்துள்ள புதிய நிர்வாகத்துடன் அவர்கள் பேச்சுவார்த்தையையும் தொடங்கியுளளனர்.
இதற்கிடையே கருணாவைத் தேடும் புலிகளின் வேட்டை தீவிரமாகியுள்ளது. தனக்கு மிக நெருக்கமான 10 பேருடன் கருணாவை காட்டுப் பகுதியில் பார்த்ததாக சிலர் கூறியதையடுத்து அங்கு புலிகளின் படை தேடுதல் வேட்டை நடத்தியது. ஆனால், அவர் சிக்கவில்லை.
இந் நிலையில் கருணாவை இலங்கை ராணுவம் காப்பாற்றி அழைத்துச் சென்றுவிட்டதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது. </span>

பிரிவினைக் குழுவினர் விட்டோடியதைத் தொடர்ந்து இயக்கத்தின் சொத்துக்கள் விசமிகளால் களவாடப்பட்டுள்ளது தெரியவந்துள்ளது. சில சம்பவங்களில் சொத்துக்கள் சேதமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஆயுதங்கள்கூடக் களவாடப் பட்டிருப்பதாகவும் பிழையான இடங்களுக்குக் கைமாறியிருப்பதாகவும் தகவல்கள் கிடைத்துள்ளன.

Karuna Revolt Strengthens Pirapa

[size=14]Karuna's revolt is now history. It collapsed abruptly. Karuna fled Sunday night in a hurry with a group of about 15 of his confidantes and bodyguards. They escaped in two vehicles.
They fled towards the Tharavai-Kudumbimalai region in the Thoppigala forest. Villagers in Pondukalchenai saw the two vehicles speeding, towards the 'Naalaam Muchchanthi' Junction on the Valaichenai-Polannaruwa Road, a junction 34 kilometres northwest of Batticoloa town, LTTE sources said.
The sources said that special LTTE reconnaissance teams, which combed the forests and remote hamlets of the area, did not find Karuna or anyone closely connected with him. The sources quoted the LTTE Special Commander for Tharavai as saying, 'We have checked every nook and cranny in that area. There is no trace of him.'
The LTTE and the Defence Ministry did not attach much importance to the report which said villagers had seen three military helicopters flying towards Meenaham, the LTTE headquarters from where Karuna operated. A section of the Colombo media said that the helicopters had picked Karuna and his men up and brought them to Colombo.
Defence secretary Cyril Herath denied that report. He also denied that Karuna and his men had surrendered to the army.
'We have not heard about his whereabouts. He had not contacted us. He is very much on his own,' he said and added if Karuna requests refuge the government is willing to consider it.
"We have not got any request for refuge. If there is a request, we are willing to consider it on humanitarian grounds," Herath said.
Military officials in Batticoloa said Karuna had informed them that he was 'calling it quits' as he was unable to meet the offensive by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Military sources in Batticoloa said that Karuna had told them that he was quitting because he was unable to withstand the Tiger attack without assistance from the army. LTTE sources said the army was behind Karuna's revolt. They said the army's conduct at every situation proved their information correct.
Karuna fled, political analysts said, because of three reasons. Firstly, his military planning went wrong. Secondly, his cry of regionalism failed to arouse the public support he expected. Thirdly, his cadres were not willing to fight for him.
Karuna's defence against the LTTE's onslaught was built on two premises. The first was that the LTTE would cross the Verugal Aru, which forms the border between Trincomalee and Batticoloa districts and push through the narrow coastal strip of land towards Vakarai and then march to Valaichchenai. The second premise was that the LTTE fighters would cross the Colombo- Batticoloa Road and march towards the Meenaham Camp.
Pirapaharan, a military genius as President Jayewardene once said (You can read that hitherto unreported incident in my 'Pirapaharan' series in a few weeks), beat Karuna hands down. He simply deceived Karuna. He first built a strong presence of his forces on the Trincomalee side of the Verugal River. Karuna fell for that clever deception and dug in his cadres on the Batticoloa side of the river. The Sri Lankan army and the Sinhalese media anticipated a heavy and costly battle inflicting a debilitating impact on the LTTE's fighting strength.
They dismissed lightly Pirapaharan's promises not to have such a battle and not to harm Karuna's cadres, the sons and daughters of the Tamil nation.
Karuna installed his artillery and other heavy weapons on the southern bank of the Verugal River and placed his elder brother, Reggie, in charge of the area.
Pirapaharan's plan was different. His operation was swift and devastating. It took Karuna and the army by surprise.
Attacking from Behind
Fifty Sea Tiger boats carrying a specially cadres and its leader Ramesh landed at Palchchnai, a fishing village between Kathiraveli and Kandaveli. It dug itself in on the coast and bidded its time for the appointed hour.
At 1 a.m. Friday the elite fighting formation divided itself into a three units force and advanced in three directions. One unit marched northwards and surrounded Karuna's cadres in a box-shaped siege. The second unit advanced towards Vakarai to cut off Karuna's supply line and take over that important coastal town. The third unit marched to Kandaladi, where Reggie had stationed reinforcements.
The attack was swift and speedy. The artillery pieces positioned north of the Verugal Aru heralded the attack with a severe pounding. Now, read the story as told by young cadre Ramanan:
'We were all fast asleep. We were awakened by the thunder of the bursting artillery shells. Our group leader urged us, 'Fire. Fire. They have come.' The command over the communication set said,'Fire. Fire. They have come.' We reacted. We fired. We fired towards the Verugal Aru. Then we realized that 'they' were not in front but were on all sides. We were in the middle of a box. We were trapped. We hid ourselves. We gave up the fight. We waited till the firing ceased.
'Then someone said, Reggie Annan has run away. Then we heard a loud hailer calling us to join their ranks. A senior, known to us, came from the other side. He called us not to waste our lives by fighting for Karuna Amman. We went with him and joined the meedppu padai.'
Karuna's defence crumbled. The base passed into the hands of the LTTE in just two hours. Three pieces of artillery, half a dozen heavy mortars and a variety of heavy weapons went back to the LTTE. Casualties wer minimal; less than ten died and a similar number were wounded.
'Our leader told us to minimize deaths and to recapture all weapons,' said Special Commander Ramesh who led the forces. 'We achieved both.'
In just two hours, by 3 a.m. on Friday, from Verugal to Vakarai had been brought under LTTE control. By evening, the area up to Mankerni, 42 kilometers from Batticoloa, was retaken. By Saturday evening, the entire northern portion of the Batticoloa district which was once under Karuna's control had been wrested. A section of Karuna's cadres surrendered and the rest fled to the southern portion.
On Saturday evening, Karuna's interpreter and media spokesman, Varathan, boasted to the Sinhala journalists that they would defend Meenaham to the last cadre. And the army announced that it would prevent the Tiger forces from crossing the Colombo-Batticoloa road. The army inducted reinforcements and strengthened its presence.
The Defence Ministry announced that any attempt by the LTTE to cross the army-controlled highway, the A-11, would be treated as a violation of the ceasefire agreement. Sinhala journalists started talking of the army being drawn into the battle and of renewed war with the LTTE. Varathan announced that their cadres were guarding all the possible points the LTTE forces would sneak through.
They were not aware that the second phase of Pirapaharan's plan had been put into action. Another special commando unit of the LTTE under Special Commander Janarthan commenced its advance from the south, from Ampara district. Starting from Thirukovil, the commando unit went from Tamil village to Tamil village and met with the LTTE cadres who were working with the Karuna faction. They told these cadres the reasons for Karuna's revolt and how he had played into the army's hand. They won the dissidents through arguments instead of bullets. By Sunday morning, the entire Ampara district had been retaken.
Parental Pressure
The message that an elite group under Janarthan was moving towards Meenaham was spread and it worked like magic. Parents of the cadres under Karuna invaded Meenaham by Sunday evening. They demanded that their children be sent back.
A group of parents surrounded the office of Nilavini, the Commander of the Women's Unit of the Karuna's forces, and demanded that their children be released. She refused. She said she had not got orders from Karuna Amman. That led to an argument. 'We don't want our children to fight for a traitor,' some shouted. 'We sent the children to fight against the Sinhala army and not to fight for the Sinhala army,' another parent threatened.
Nilavini was adamant. She said that she could not take a decision. Enraged parents assaulted her. Similar pressure had built in other units also. Parental pressure swelled. The cadres themselves were in revolt. Hundred of cadres walked out of their camp, flung their weapons in front of one of Karuna's offices, and walked away.
Karuna had no option but to disband his cadres. He told the commanders to announce his decision to disband the units. Nilavini announced that decision to her unit, which had shrunk to about 300 by Sunday night. She told her cadres that they are free to return to their parents if they wished to or to rejoin the LTTE. On Monday morning many returned to their homes. A few opted to join the LTTE.
The southern portion of Karuna's empire fell by Monday morning without the LTTE firing even a single shot. The few shots fired were from Karuna's side, the LTTE said. It said Karuna had shot dead Neelan and three other LTTE operatives who were in his custody. He had released the others in his custody, including Karikalan's brother.
The LTTE said Thaaththa (Jim Kelly) and Robert, commanders of the Karuna Group's armed units, Varathan, his spokesman, Kuhanes, the head of the finance unit, Jeevendran, leader of the Visaalahan Unit, Nilavini, leader of the female fighting units in Batticoloa, Thurai, the cadre overseeing NGOs in the eastern district, Nizam, the head of TEEDOR, the LTTE's development organisation in Batticaloa, Ilankes, a close associate and five body guards accompanied Karuna.
Reporters who went to Meenaham said they saw a huge fire. LTTE sources confirmed it. They said the Karuna group had set fire to some vehicles. They were half burnt when the LTTE fighters reached Meenaham.
'It appears they fled in a great hurry. We found vehicles half loaded with various items,' they said.
Apart from parental pressure and mutiny of the cadres LTTE sources gave two more reasons for Karuna's hurried flight. They said a strike by the LTTE's Special Forces in the deep interior must have put Karuna off balance and made him panic. They also added that he might have come to know that the units that were refusing to obey his orders were establishing contact with the LTTE. 'He had clearly lost control of his troops', the LTTE said.
The LTTE said that it has recovered the Batticaloa-Amparai district armoury fully, except for a heavy mortar and some rifles. The ammunition stores are intact.
The Tigers moved into the entire area southwest of Batticaloa town Monday. Several military units of the LTTE, which moved from different directions, took control of Kokkadichcholai around Monday noon.
Karuna Group's propaganda organ, the Tamil Alai office and the Press were taken over by members of the LTTE's political division, who also moved into the area.
Hundreds of male and female cadres from Meenaham returned to their villages from Monday morning. Tigers are releasing the child soldiers of the Karuna faction who join the LTTE. So far they have released 269 child soldiers to the UNCIEF.
The residents of the Batticaloa-Amparai district have expressed happiness over the swift end of the tensions caused by the Karuna group in the region. They thanked Pirapaharan for limiting the operation to four days and for minimizing the deaths to only 10, which included two civilians. The people are getting ready to celebrate the Tamil New Year with relief, reporters who visited the Batticoloa- Ampara region said.
Civilians in the northern portion of the Batticoloa district who fled their home on Friday and Saturday have returned to their homes.
"We visited the area and found the situation returning to normal and that there is no conflict at all. People were found gradually returning to their homes," said Sukumar Rockwood, spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Kausalyan, the LTTE's political chief, has returned to Batticoloa and has recommenced the political work. He has invited all those who were sent away from Batticoloa to return. Some of the doctors who were sent away have returned to the Batticoloa hospital and a few traders have also returned.
Monitors who oversee the island's two-year truce said the Tigers had installed Karuna's replacement, Ramesh, in the area, adding that they had met him late on Monday.
"Ramesh met our monitors to re-establish communication with the LTTE in the area. The meeting was good. We are back on track again," said Hagrup Haukland, the deputy head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission.
"It is quite clear the LTTE has regained control over the area," he said. </span>

"Karthigaipoo" or Gloriosa Lily (Botanical name - Liliaceae Glory lily), which has the spectrum of colors contained in the Tamil Eelam national flag and which in November, the month of Heroes day celebrations, ubiquitously spreads, sprouts new shoots and blooms throughout the NorthEast, has been proclaimed the official national flower of Eelam Tamils. Reliable sources from Vanni said that the Karthigaipoo was designated as Tamil Eelam National flower by the LTTE administration during the Great Heros rememberence week in November 2003.
The administrative officials of NorthEast have requested the residents to wear the national flower on all occassions of national significance. They also urge everyone to grow the Karthigai vine in private homes, public places, business premises, educational institutions and other places in NorthEast.
The Karthigai flower changes colors and therefore described by two tamil names: Ven-Karnthal (white), and Chenk-Karnthal (Red). The petals are reflexed back at the tip and wavy edged. After full bloom the flower will remain fresh for seven days. Colors of the petals change from inital green to whitish yellow to yellow, then reddish yellow to scarlet, fading to red.
When the tuber is split, the ones with shoots are called Aan-Karnthal (male), and ones without are called Penn-Karnathal (female).
The tubers are used in Ayurvedic and Unani practices. The poison, colchicine, present in the tuber is the primary ingredient in the medicinal use of the plant. Colchicine is used in Western medicine also but the usage is different. In ayurvedic system a paste of the tuber is applied for skin disorders such as warts or blackheads and also for scorpian bites. It is poisonous if directly ingested.
This flowering vine which blooms in the month of November is found in India, China, Malayan Peninsula and in parts of Africa besides NorthEast of Sri Lanka.
Karthigaipoo has several names in Tamil. Because of its flame like appearance the flower is also called 'Agnisalam.' Because the tuber resembles a plowshare in appearance it is called 'Kalappai' and also 'Ilaangilee.' Because the tips of the leaves appear curled it is also called 'Thalai-surilee.' Since the leaves curl and grasp to climb it is also called 'Patee.' Because of its curling grasp it is called 'Th-ontri.' In indigenous medicine it is called 'Ven-thontri.'
Flowers distinctively symbolize nation states. States traditionally declare flowers, which are inextricably intertwined with their lore, culture and ethos, as national emblems and honor and protect them just like the respective nations' flag.
The tradition of flowers representing nations of the world has been in vogue since Vedic times. Judeo-Christian Old Testament Book "Song of Solomon" says that lotus and blue water lily represented ancient Egypt.
Flowers play a part not only in the symbolic function of a State but also in the religious beliefs of the people.
In the United States of America, each State has a flower declared as the State flower.
Hindus and Buddhists use flowers during worship. According to Islamic legend florescent white roses lined Mohamed's route to Heaven as a reflection of happiness. A Tamil poet, Arivumathi, has noted that the flower of ancient Tamil's War God, Murugan, was Karthigai flower.
In classical Greece the mastwood flower not only was offered to the God Apollo but also was the flower of choice in honoring the learned. The olive was not only the tree of the Goddess of Athens but also was used to honor athletes and warriors who had displayed bravery in the battlefield. Romans crowned their illustrious generals with wreaths fashioned out of the leaves and flowers of the scarlet exora.
Ancient Tamil kings each had a favorite flower which he adopted as his own. For the Chola's it was the ficus glomarata ("Aththipoo"), the Chera's, the Palmyrah flower, the Pandyas, the Margosa flower, which in each case was the Kingdom's flower. In "Tamil Civilization and Culture," Thadchinamoorthy mentions that these kings wore only garlands made of each one's flower on his way to war. He further mentions that smaller sovereigns also had their own emblematic flower garlands and that the more valiant of the Tamil chieftains, Aai Andiran, wore mastwood flower garlands of Karnthal, the traditional Tamil name for Karthigai.
Dimensions of flower, leaves:
The vine's stem is soft and weak. The tips of the leaves are long and curly, and grasp adjacent vegetation for support and grow to a height of 10 to 20 feet. New shoots grow out of tuber in the ground. Tuber is normally about 6" to 12" long and 1" to 1.5" thick. Each of the tuber's pit sprouts a new shoot. The leaves have no petioles. The leaves are between 3" and 6" long and 0.75" to 1.75" wide and can be in the form of alternate rows or rows in opposition. If a node fails to sprout leaves these could have a circular form.
The flowers are large. They form individually at the point where the petiole meets the stem or at the end of the branch where because of the cluster of leaves they appear in inflorescence. The large (6-7 cm Long) six petal flowers, each of which look like a flame in a dish bloom from September to January. The pedicel is 3 to 6" long. The petals measure 2.5" long and 0.3" to 0.5" wide. Filaments are 6", anthers 1.5" to 1.75" and the stigma 0.5" and can turn in different directions. The ovary has 3 chambers; the stylus is 2" long and is bent in one direction. </span>

Karuna's associate returns to LTTE

Mr.Visu (Sinnathamby Gopalan), who was appointed as the political head of the Karuna group in Batticaloa and Amparai districts by the renegade commander Vinayagamoorthy Muraleetharan when he broke away from the Liberation Tigers, rejoined the LTTE Wednesday afternoon in Batticaloa town, sources said.
Mr. Visu, a close associate of renegade commander Karuna, went over to the LTTE Wednesday afternoon in the Batticaloa town. More military and political cadres of the Karuna group returned to the LTTE Wednesday. Karuna and Visu are from the same village, Kiran, which is located about 28 km south of Batticaloa town, sources said.
Mr.Visu was a senior member of the LTTE in Batticaloa.
A wounded leader of the military unit of the Karuna group also made contacts with the LTTE leaders in Batticaloa Wednesday, sources said.
LTTE sources further said that they are now in the process of re-organizing and revamping their political and administrative structures in the districts of Batticaloa and Amparai after the retrieval of the area from the Karuna group.
The LTTE also said they are expediting the work of restoring normalcy in the two districts that had been disrupted by the activities of the renegade group.

All TNA parliamentarians to visit Kilinochchi Friday

All the twenty-two Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians are expected to meet the political head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Mr.S.P.Thamilchelvan, Friday in Kilinochchi, sources in the Vanni said Wednesday.
The TNA has 20 MPs elected directly and an additional two national list MPs. The 22 MPs will meet first on Friday morning in Colombo and from there they will proceed to Kilinochchi the same day, TNA sources said.
All five TNA parliamentarians of the Batticaloa district have already arrived in Colombo to attend Friday's meeting. The defeat of the renegade commander Karuna in the military operation launched by the LTTE has enabled the five eastern parliamentarians to move freely without any restrictions from Batticaloa to Colombo and elsewhere, Tamil sources said.
TNA's parliamentary group leader, Mr.R.Sampanthan, is to preside over the meeting in Colombo. They will discuss in detail the proposed strategy to be adopted on the first day when the new parliament meets on April 22 to elect a Speaker, the sources said. </span>

A meeting has taken place between the Tamil Tigers in the east and the Sri Lankan army.
It is the first since a split in the rebel movement earlier this year, and signals a return to normalcy.
The two sides said they would uphold the two-year-old ceasefire.
The meeting coincided with the news that a senior Tamil Tiger rebel was killed by the leader of the breakaway faction, Colonel Karuna.
The administration led by Colonel Karuna collapsed earlier this week after brief fighting.
Peace on track
Ramesh, the newly installed Tamil Tiger leader in the east, called for the meeting with the Sri Lankan army.
He assumed control of the region following the mass disbanding of Colonel Karuna's forces on Monday and his subsequent disappearance.
Norwegian-led peace monitors had travelled to the east to facilitate the talks.
Major General Trond Furuhovde, who led the monitors, described the meeting as positive.
The two sides issued a statement after the meeting saying they had restored relations and agreed to uphold the two-year-old ceasefire.
The peace monitors say they hope to restart their patrols around Batticaloa into Colonel Karuna's former stronghold following these discussions.
So far patrols have only restarted in the north of the region.
Top rebel killed
Meanwhile the Tamil Tigers say one of their most senior intelligence officers has been killed by Colonel Karuna.
They say the man, Neelan Sinnathamby, was shot shortly before Colonel Karuna called off his rebeillion on Monday and fled.
A pro-rebel website is also reporting the Tamil Tigers as having returned all child soldiers in the east back to their parents.
Two-hundred-and-sixty-nine young fighters were recently released, nearly 150 of whom were under 18.
In Batticaloa town, Jaffna Tamil businessmen originally from the north who were expelled by Colonel Karuna a fortnight ago are slowly returning and reopening their shops.
Norwegian-led peace monitors have resumed work observing the ceasefire in the east.
Now that the situation there appears to be resolved, President Chandrika Kumaratunga has the difficult task of fulfilling her election pledge to restart the stalled peace negotiations with the Tamil Tigers, says the BBC's Anna Horsbrugh-Porter in Colombo. </span>
