Thamils in Mattakalappu Condemn the Activities of Karuna - Thursday, March 04, 2004 at 15:06

Thamil people in Mattakalappu strongly criticise the act of LTTE's Mattakalapu leadership which leads the cadres under their command deviated from the Vanni leadership.

Since the Mattakalapu leadership of LTTE fails to obey the command of Vanni leadership, 63 in-charge persons from Mattakalapu left the Mattakalapu leadership, went to Vanni and joined with the Vanni leadership.

Mattakalappu-Amparai special commander Mr.Ramesh, Mattakalapu-Amparai Political wing in-charge Mr.Cowsalyan, Military wing commander Mr. Ram, Administration in-charge Mr. Piraba and some other key leaders of the Mattakalapu District left Mattakalapu leadership and showed their loyalty to the National leadership.

It is also learnt that lots of cadres form the East are fleeing to Vanni through jungles in-order to join with the Vanni leadership. Senior cadres of the LTTE Jeyanthan Battalion are said to be vacated three camps and fled to Vanni last night.

Mr. Balakumar and two other senior officials from LTTE are expected to visit Mattakalapu very soon.

In order to settle the dispute between the leadership of Mattakalapu and Vanni, Mr. Balakumar may carry out a very strong negotiating mechanism very soon, reliable sources said.

<b>Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka are facing a major crisis after one of their leaders split to form his own breakaway group.</b>

Rebel sources confirmed that Colonel Karuna, a commander in the east, had broken ranks after facing the threat of disciplinary action.

The Tigers' leadership earlier admitted there was a crisis in the movement, but insisted it was only temporary.

The BBC's Frances Harrison in Colombo says the rift is unprecedented.

<b>Independence move</b>

It is not yet clear why Colonel Karuna, a Tiger commander in the east, has split away.

He was thought to be unhappy that the bulk of the rebel fighters come from the east and yet all the top leadership comes from the north of Sri Lanka.

He told the Associated Press that he had asked the government to negotiate a separate ceasefire agreement for areas under his faction's control.

"We think it's very important to have a separate defence pact with the security forces," Colonel Karuna told AP at his jungle hide-out in Batticaloa.

Our correspondent says this is a virtual declaration of independence from the rebel leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, a man who was brooked no dissent in the past.

Few could have predicted the crisis, she says, in a disciplined and secretive guerrilla movement like the Tigers.

Colonel Karuna was part of the Tamil Tiger team taking part in peace talks.

<b>Rival groups</b>

His move could complicate peace moves, putting the Norwegian mediators and the Sri Lankan government in a difficult position.

If they negotiate with Colonel Karuna, they will incur the wrath of the northern leadership, our correspondent says.

Rebel sources say it is not clear yet whether some of the thousands of men and women under his command will join him in splitting from the main Tigers group.

That would seriously complicate the peace process by dividing the rebel movement into two rival groups in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

It is not clear why such grievances should surface now, just as the country is gearing up for general elections next month.

<b>Election issue</b>

A pro-rebel website, Tamilnet, earlier quoted the head of the Tigers' political wing, saying the crisis was only temporary and would be resolved soon.

The reports of a rift in the Tigers' leadership prompted Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe to hold an emergency meeting with officials and diplomats on Wednesday.

And the head of the Norwegian-led Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission, Trond Furuhovde, flew to the north for a crisis meeting with the Tiger leadership on Thursday.

"They had a good constructive meeting," SLMM peace monitor spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir said.

The peace process is in a state of limbo at present with the prime minister and President Chandrika Kumaratunga divided on the best way of bringing an end to a conflict that has killed more than 60,000 people.

The debate over the peace process is expected to be one of the main issues in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Sri Lanka rebels seek truce

THE breakaway group of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels has asked the government to negotiate a separate truce, the dissident faction's leader said today.

"We think it's very important to have a separate defence pact with the security forces," head of the breakaway group Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan said at his hide-out in Thoppigala jungle in Batticaloa, 220km east of Colombo.

Muralitharan, also known as Karuna, said his faction had approached the government about negotiating a separate truce in areas controlled by the group.

Muralitharan yesterday said that his group is breaking away from the main rebel faction headed by Velupillai Prabhakaran who runs affairs from the Wanni region of the island's north.

Prabhakaran signed a ceasefire agreement with the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in February 2002 to end a 19-year-old civil war.

Karuna, the former eastern military leader of Tamil Tigers has warned his former chief that he will retaliate if he was attacked. He has made this comment when a correspondent of a media institution interviewed him in one of his eastern hideouts.

Karuna has split from the control of Tiger leader owing to the heated political situation following the killing of eastern candidates who contest for the forthcoming election. These assassinations are alleged conducted by Tiger intelligence cadres personally commanded by Pottuamman. Since he as eastern military leader of Tigers was pointed as responsible for these cold blood killings Karuna has decided deviate from Tiger command and to operate on his own.

Answering the media correspondent of his future relationship with Tamil Tiger leader Prabhakarana Karuna has said that he will never interfere with Prabhakaran and his operation will be independent. “If he (the Tiger leader) attempts to interfere with our affairs in the east, that won’t be tolerated. If he attacks we will retaliate” Karuna has insisted.

He has written to Norway that he was resigning from the organization as the responsibility of the murders in the East are put on their account and all the foreign tours and other activities of the organization are being given to a selected few of the organization. As such he has said that he no longer represents Velupillai Prabhakarans view but would operate as a separate unit in the East. This situation would weaken the authority the tiger organization had in the East. Attempts made by SLMM officials to meet Karuna have not been successful.

கருணா தலைமையிலான விடுதலைப் புலிகள் இயக்கப் பிரிவுடன் எந்தவிதமான பாதுகாப்பு உடன்படிக்கையும் செய்து கொள்ள மாட்டோம் என இலங்கை ராணுவம் கூறியுள்ளது.

மட்டக்களப்பில் நடந்த சில அரசியல் கொலைகள் தொடர்பாக புலிகள் இயக்க உளவுப் பிரிவுத் தலைவர் பொட்டு அம்மனுக்கும், கிழக்குப் பகுதி புலிகளின் கமாண்டரான கருணாவுக்கும் இடையே கருத்து வேறுபாடு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதனால் தனது ஆதரவு படைகளுடன் கருணா தனியாக செயல்பட ஆரம்பித்துள்ளதாகவும், தங்களுடன் இலங்கை அரசு தனியே பாதுகாப்பு ஒப்பந்தம் செய்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று கூறியதாகவும் தகவல்கள் வந்துள்ளன.

ஆனால், அதை புலிகள் மறுத்துள்ளனர். சிறிய கருத்து வேறுபாடு உள்ளதாகவும், தாற்காலிகமான இந்த விவகாரம் விரைவில் தீர்க்கப்பட்டுவிடும் என்றும் அந்த அமைப்பின் அரசியல் பிரிவுத் தலைவர் தமிழ்செல்வன் கூறியுள்ளார்.

இந்த விவகாரம் தொடர்பாக நார்வே அமைதிக் குழுவினர் நேற்று புலிகளின் பிரதிநிதிகளை கிழிநொச்சியில் சந்தித்துப் பேசினர். அவர்கள் கொழும்பில் இருந்து கிழிநொச்சி செல்ல இலங்கை ராணுவம் தனது ஹெலிகாப்டரை வழங்கியது.

இந் நிலையில் இலங்கை பாதுகாப்புத்துறைச் செயலாளர் சிரில் ஹெராத் இன்று நிருபர்களிடம் கூறுகையில்,

இலங்கை ராணுவ கமாண்டர்கள் மூலமாக கருணா எங்களைத் தொடர்பு கொண்டார். அப்போது தன்னுடன் தனியே ஒப்பந்தம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று கோரினார். ஆனால், இதற்கு ராணுவ அதிகாரிகள் எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவித்துளளனர்.

கருணா தரப்புடன் எந்தவித உடன்படிக்கையிலும் அரசு கையெழுத்திடாது. பிரபாகரனுக்கும் பிரதமர் ரணிலுக்கும் இடையே அமைதி உடன்படிக்கை கையெழுத்தாகியுள்ளது. அப்படி இருக்கையில் அதே தரப்பைச் சேர்ந்த இன்னொருவருடன் எப்படி உடன்பாடு செய்ய முடியும்?

இப்போதைக்கு இரு தரப்பினருமே அமைதி உடன்பாட்டை மதித்து நடப்பதாக உறுதியளித்துள்ளனர். இன்றைய சூழலில் எந்த பிரச்சனைக்கும் நாங்கள் தயாராக இல்லை. அவர்கள் ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் மோதாமல் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றார் சிரில்.
